We are seeking a Manager of Commercial Rights and Business Affairs to join the BBC's Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs (CRBA) team within the CRBA Commissioning (Scripted & Acquisitions) division. This role is offered as a Fixed Term Contract and can be performed from various BBC locations across the UK.
The CRBA team is responsible for managing and optimizing the BBC's Intellectual Property, along with its strategic and commercial interests through proficient negotiation, contracting, and deal-making. The team comprises several business units integrated within Content, including Television, Radio & Music, Children's & Education, Sport, and News, as well as a central CRBA unit. These teams engage in essential business activities that are critical to the commissioning, production, and distribution of the BBC's services and content.
The Scripted & Acquisitions division is a diverse team tasked with commissioning, licensing, acquiring, overseeing production, and broadcasting scripted content across all BBC channels, while also ensuring availability on BBC iPlayer.
This position presents an exciting opportunity during a transformative period for the BBC. You will play a vital role in enhancing audience value and commercial returns in a rapidly evolving digital and competitive landscape.
While you may focus on specific CRBA areas and responsibilities, you may also be required to engage in other CRBA functions to expand your knowledge and experience.
All CRBA team members are expected to be 'agile workers', with an average of 2-3 days per week spent in BBC facilities.
Key Responsibilities
As a CRBA Manager for Content, including Drama and Comedy commissioning and Acquisitions, you will collaborate closely with Senior CRBA Managers and the Director of CRBA. Your role will involve supporting the CRBA team and genre-specific business and commissioning teams, with a strong emphasis on contractual matters. This position is crucial for driving the strategy to acquire, optimize, and leverage content IP. Additionally, you will serve as the primary resource for negotiation, legal drafting, and contracting within the Content commercial team and across the Content CRBA team as needed.
Are You the Ideal Candidate?
To excel in this role, you should possess experience in providing general legal and IP guidance, along with demonstrable expertise in the commissioning process, rights issues related to digital media, and content acquisition agreements. A solid understanding of media business and legal affairs concerning content commissioning is essential, complemented by experience across TV and digital platforms.
A thorough knowledge of the production process and experience in negotiating and contracting with talent and their representatives is also required. Familiarity with key rights frameworks and regulatory guidelines is crucial.
Furthermore, you should have extensive experience managing multiple projects to completion within time and budget constraints. Your strong analytical abilities, creative problem-solving skills, and decision-making capabilities will support your success. With excellent interpersonal skills and experience in relationship management, you will effectively influence both internal and external stakeholders, supported by your advanced negotiation and communication skills.
