London, Greater London, United Kingdom The Francis Crick Institute Full time

We are pleased to announce an opportunity for a Mechanical Engineering Technician to become part of a prestigious research institution, contributing significantly to its ongoing development and future direction.

This is a full-time, permanent position that offers a competitive salary.

Role Overview:

At our institute, researchers engage in a diverse range of physical, behavioral, and neurological studies, utilizing specialized tools and systems that necessitate design, development, and manufacturing to support their scientific endeavors.

The mechanical engineering workshop plays a vital role in this process. Our team collaborates closely with scientists to devise solutions tailored to their research requirements.

The technician will oversee a variety of projects from the initial inquiry through to scope definition, options analysis, design, development, prototyping, manufacturing, and product refinement.

Key responsibilities include gathering user requirements (both verbal and written), transforming these into actionable solutions, identifying and developing options, and assessing buildability and manufacturing techniques to meet scientific objectives.

Staying abreast of cutting-edge knowledge is essential for the development of these products, whether sourced internally or through specialized providers.

Presenting options and identifying technical solutions to achieve scientific outcomes is a critical aspect of this role. The technician will also produce 2D and 3D CAD drawings for manufacturing purposes.

This position requires a proactive individual who can work autonomously and relishes the challenge of creating custom items, such as micro-adjusters for imaging devices, specialized samplers, and attachments for scientific instruments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilizing a combination of manual and CNC machinery to fabricate custom components from various materials with high precision and quality.
  • Constructing and modifying apparatus based on personal designs, technical drawings, and verbal instructions.
  • Providing guidance to clients on mechanical design and construction, translating concepts into the design phase using technical expertise to interpret client requirements.
  • Discussing and evaluating the application and performance of specialized engineering equipment.
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of operating procedures, risk assessments, and method statements for developed products.
  • Creating engineering drawings and 3D models using design software such as Fusion 360 and AutoCAD, ensuring components are manufactured within specified tolerances.
  • Adhering to health, safety, and sustainability protocols.

This role involves extensive communication with scientific research and operational staff, as well as external providers.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Educational background in Engineering (ONC/D or equivalent) with completion of a recognized engineering apprenticeship.
  • Demonstrated experience operating machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
  • Experience in designing and constructing complex mechanical systems and high-precision components.
  • Proficiency in the maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical workshop practices and instrumentation.
  • Strong understanding of workplace health and safety regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with clients and team members.
  • Exceptional practical skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • A collaborative mindset, capable of building and maintaining professional relationships.
