London, Greater London, United Kingdom The Francis Crick Institute Full time

We are pleased to announce an opportunity for a Mechanical Engineering Technician to become part of a prestigious research institution, contributing significantly to its ongoing development and future direction.

This is a full-time, permanent position that offers a competitive salary.

Role Overview:

At the forefront of scientific exploration, our researchers engage in a diverse range of physical, behavioral, and neurological studies, utilizing specialized tools and systems that necessitate innovative design, development, and manufacturing processes.

The mechanical engineering workshop plays a pivotal role in supporting these endeavors. Our team collaborates closely with scientists to devise tailored solutions that meet their research requirements.

The technician will oversee a variety of projects from the initial inquiry stage, through defining the scope, analyzing options, designing, developing prototypes, manufacturing, and refining products.

Key responsibilities include gathering user requirements (both verbal and written), converting these into actionable solutions, identifying and developing options, and assessing manufacturability and production techniques to fulfill scientific objectives.

Producing 2D and 3D CAD drawings for manufacturing is also a critical aspect of this role.

This position calls for an individual with a proactive mindset, capable of working autonomously and relishing the challenge of creating custom items such as micro-adjusters for imaging devices, specialized samplers, and attachments for scientific apparatus.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Utilize a combination of manual and CNC machinery to fabricate custom components from various materials, ensuring high standards of precision and quality.

2. Provide guidance to clients on mechanical design and construction, transforming concepts into designs by leveraging technical expertise and experience to interpret client requirements.

3. Discuss and assess the application and performance of specialized engineering equipment.

4. Assist in the development and maintenance of operational procedures, risk assessments, and method statements for produced items.

5. Create engineering drawings and 3D models using design software such as Fusion 360 and AutoCAD, ensuring components are manufactured within specified tolerances.

6. Engage in extensive communication with scientific research and operational teams, as well as external partners and service providers.

Qualifications and Experience:

1. Educated to ONC/D in Engineering or equivalent, with completion of a recognized engineering apprenticeship.

2. Demonstrated experience in operating machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, and grinders.

3. Proven background in designing and constructing complex mechanical systems and high-precision components.

4. Experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.

5. Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical workshop practices and instrumentation.

If you possess the necessary skills and experience to excel as a Mechanical Engineering Technician, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.
