Paediatric Medical Practitioner

London, Greater London, United Kingdom King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Full time
Position Overview:

As a key member of the healthcare team, you will be expected to perform duties across various sites as required by the service. Your role will involve close collaboration with clinical, medical, and managerial colleagues to deliver exceptional healthcare to patients.

Clinical Responsibilities:

Your responsibilities will encompass all aspects of documentation and care for medical and surgical paediatric inpatients, outpatients, and children presenting to the emergency department. You will assist consultants in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees in paediatrics, while actively participating in departmental quality improvement initiatives.

The department has recently expanded, featuring a paediatric clinical decision unit along with dedicated ambulant and trolley areas. Additionally, there is a separate adolescent and sensory room, and a high dependency unit (HDU) cubicle distinct from the main resuscitation area, which is also utilized for procedural sedation.

The paediatric emergency department operates 24/7, staffed entirely by children's nurses. Medical staffing is a collaborative effort between Child Health and Emergency Medicine teams, including a paediatric nurse consultant and an established Physician Associate Clinical Programme.

We also have a dedicated team of youth workers to support our most vulnerable young individuals, including an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA).

Trauma Care:

As the major trauma centre for the region, we receive both adult and paediatric patients via ambulance and helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS), with an active helipad available around the clock. On average, we assess 250 children annually who have experienced major trauma, including a significant number of penetrating injuries. These cases are managed by a consultant-led, multidisciplinary trauma team upon arrival, ensuring immediate access to imaging, interventional radiology, and damage control surgery.

Team Collaboration:

You will share responsibilities with other medical and dental colleagues to provide comprehensive services for Child Health. This includes a commitment to 24/7 coverage for the unit on a rotational basis, along with covering colleagues during periods of annual leave and short-term illness.

Your outpatient clinic commitments will be determined in agreement with the Care Group management team. It is essential to adhere to all infection prevention and control policies established by the Trust, including hand hygiene and environmental cleanliness.

Qualifications and Skills:

A registerable medical qualification is required, along with the ability to demonstrate competencies expected of a new ST4 level paediatric trainee or higher. A Level 3 Safeguarding certificate is mandatory.

Experience in audit and quality improvement is essential, with a thorough understanding of medical audit principles. You should have completed audit projects and possess experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation.

We seek an effective communicator who can thrive in a collaborative team environment, demonstrating flexibility and resilience in your approach.
