London, Greater London, United Kingdom King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Full time
Position Overview:

As a vital member of the healthcare team, you will be expected to perform duties across various Trust locations as dictated by service needs. Your role will involve close collaboration with clinical, medical, and managerial professionals to deliver exceptional healthcare services to our patients.

Clinical Responsibilities:

Your responsibilities will encompass all aspects of documentation and care for medical and surgical paediatric inpatients, outpatients, and children presenting to the emergency department (ED). You will assist consultants in educating both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees in paediatrics, while actively participating in departmental quality improvement initiatives.

The department has recently expanded, introducing a paediatric clinical decision unit along with dedicated ambulant and trolley areas. Notably, there is a separate adolescent and sensory room, and a high dependency unit (HDU) cubicle that is distinct from the main resuscitation area, utilized for procedural sedation.

The paediatric ED operates 24/7, staffed entirely by children's nurses, with medical staffing provided collaboratively by Child Health and Emergency Medicine teams, including a paediatric nurse consultant and an established Physician Associate Clinical Programme (PACP).

In addition to health visiting services, the Trust employs a team of youth workers dedicated to supporting our most vulnerable young individuals.

Trauma Care:

As the major trauma centre for the region, we receive both adult and paediatric patients via ambulance and helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS), with an active helipad available around the clock. Annually, we assess approximately 250 children who have suffered major trauma, including a significant number of penetrating injuries. These patients are evaluated by a consultant-led, multidisciplinary trauma team upon arrival, ensuring immediate access to imaging, interventional radiology, and damage control surgery.

Team Collaboration:

You will share responsibilities with fellow colleagues to ensure 24/7 coverage for the unit on a rotational basis. This includes covering for colleagues during periods of annual leave and short-term illness, as well as fulfilling outpatient clinic commitments at peripheral hospitals as coordinated with the Care Group management team.

Compliance and Standards:

It is essential to adhere to all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, and environmental sanitation. You are required to possess a registerable medical qualification and demonstrate competencies expected of a new ST4 level paediatric trainee or higher.

Training and Development:

A Level 3 Safeguarding certificate is mandatory, along with a comprehensive understanding of medical audit principles and quality improvement processes. You should have successfully completed audit projects and possess experience in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation.

Communication Skills:

Effective communication is crucial, as you will be working within a close-knit team and collaborating with all medical and paramedical staff. Flexibility and resilience are key attributes for success in this role.
