Job Overview

Position: Head of Commercial

Location: Birmingham

Compensation: Competitive base salary commensurate with experience, plus a flexible benefits package of 20% on top of the base salary, fully pensionable, along with a variety of attractive benefits.

Role Responsibilities:

Pre-Contract Phase:
  • Provide essential commercial insights to shape procurement strategies and package plans for significant infrastructure contracts, ensuring cost-effectiveness and value.
  • Assist the Procurement team in crafting and delivering tender and contract documentation, ensuring alignment with established strategies.
  • Support the development and implementation of tender evaluation frameworks.
Procurement Phase:
  • Facilitate the evaluation, moderation, and negotiation of tenders, aiding in the contract award process.
  • Ensure compliance with HS2 governance standards.
  • Develop a comprehensive contract management strategy.
  • Support the readiness of contracts for execution.
Post-Contract Phase:
  • Oversee the management of major HS2 infrastructure contracts, ensuring effective commercial oversight, including assessment of variations, payments, and performance incentives.
  • Lead monthly contract performance reviews and address supply chain disputes.
  • Provide ongoing commercial guidance to the client team.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and develop proposals for approval.
  • Foster a collaborative culture within Integrated Project Teams (IPT) that encourages innovation and knowledge sharing.
  • Manage the commercial relationship with key contractors and oversee estimates at all project stages.
  • Promote and integrate Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles in all aspects of work.

Essential Skills:
  • Proven ability to lead and manage high-value contracts for complex infrastructure projects.
  • Expertise in developing commercial and procurement strategies for major projects.
  • Strong negotiation skills to resolve disputes while maintaining critical business relationships.
  • Experience in managing diverse stakeholder groups to achieve project success.
  • Capability to enhance commercial policies and procedures.
  • Experience in leading and developing commercial teams in complex environments.
