Maintain own professional registration and practice within the NMCs Code of Professional Conduct / HCPCs Code of Professional Conduct. Provide visible, effective clinical and professional leadership to all staff within the ward / department. To be responsible for the patients clinical journey in conjunction with medical colleagues, along the agreed patient care pathways supported by evidence-based practice. Act as a mentor/role model to enhance the performance and capability of others through formal and informal interactions.
Provide constructive feedback to support and enable others to develop their potential. Act as a resource for those seeking to expand their knowledge and experience within the ward / department. Foster an open, inclusive style of management, promoting cohesive team working, whilst ensuring that communication channels are effective within the ward / department. Support the Clinical Matron in working in partnership with all members of the health and social care community to promote collaborative working and develop robust patient pathways within the speciality.
Represent the Trust and the profession at local, regional and national events and networks as required. Support the Divisional Matron / Clinical Matron in the delivery of the Safeguarding Adults and Children agendas. Ensure appropriate systems are in place to monitor, develop and review the quality of care through clinical audit and benchmarking, taking action to ensure that patient care is improved in line with organisation requirements. Ensure that the collection of required data takes place and that action plans within the ward / department to maintain/improve standards are put in place and completed.
Promote research and evidence-based practice within the ward / department. To ensure Trust policies and practices are implemented which will promote the Health & Safety environment of all patients, staff and visitors to the ward / department. To be proactive in dealing with concerns and complaints from patients, patients families and staff. Support the Clinical Matron in investigating and responding to formal complaints and Serious Incidents when they arise and undertake RCAs of incidents and infections as required.
Develop a culture within the ward / department that supports staff to actively contribute to the clinical governance agenda. Ensure that appropriate risk assessments are undertaken in accordance with Trust policies and any concerns are reported to the Clinical Matron for appropriate escalation within the division. Working with the infection prevention and control team, clinical colleagues and Clinical Matrons monitor infection rates and take forward those actions and changes necessary to reduce the incidence. To effectively manage the ward / department budget to ensure agreed services are delivered and income and expenditure balance is achieved.
To contribute to the identification of service improvements which deliver efficiencies into the financial manoeuvrings within QUIPP and internal SIP targets. Demonstrate on-going professional development by keeping up to date with national and local developments in nursing / midwifery and NHS policy and practice. To deputise as appropriate for the Clinical Matron. To provide a positive image of the Trust.
