Exciting Opportunity for a Diagnostic Imaging Specialist in Interventional Radiology

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Radiographer to join our Interventional Radiology team at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. The Diagnostic Imaging Department has achieved accreditation through the Quality Standards for Imaging (QSI) and has been inspected and rated by the Care Quality Commission as 'Outstanding', the highest possible rating.

The Clinical Imaging Service is county-wide, offering patients high-quality diagnostics in their local community hospital or specialist services at the Royal Cornwall, St Michaels, and West Cornwall Hospitals. The successful candidate may initially start as a Band 5 Trainee IR Radiographer, with an accelerated pathway for Band 5 to Band 6 progression.

As a valuable member of the team, you will provide a quality-led and timely imaging service. We actively support and encourage Radiographers in their career development and are committed to providing increased opportunities to widen specialist skills, extend roles, and deliver advanced practice.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To support the delivery of a wide range of diagnostic and interventional procedures carried out in the IR theatre suite, Cardiac Catheter Labs, and gastrointestinal/general fluoroscopy suite.
  • To work with the IR Team Leader and Advanced Practitioner Radiographers to ensure the efficient and cost-effective delivery of the IR service.
  • To act as shift coordinator in the absence of the IR Team Leader or Advanced Practitioner, taking responsibility for the operation of the IR department, including prioritizing the workload, managing workflow, and staff resources to ensure the highest standards of patient care are achieved.
  • To justify radiology referrals within scope of practice using referral criteria that falls within the Royal College of Radiologists Guidelines and Clinical Imaging protocols.
  • To comply with the Ionising Radiation Regulation (IRR 17), Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) regulations (IR(ME)R 2017), and the Trust Radiation Safety Policy.
  • Liaise closely with Consultant Radiologists and colleagues within clinical multidisciplinary teams to ensure that patients receive optimum care.

About Us:

The Imaging Department currently takes student Radiographers from Exeter University and is a training site for Radiologists. We are a teaching hospital in partnership with the University of Exeter Medical School, University of Plymouth School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Peninsula Dental School.

The Knowledge Spa on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site is the base for medical and nursing education, as well as ongoing education for health professions in clinical and non-clinical roles.

Person Specification:

  • DCR(R) or BSc Hons (Radiography) in Diagnostic Imaging
  • Good level of postgraduate experience
  • Trauma, Acute, and general experience
  • Portfolio evidence of relevant experience in Clinical Imaging
  • IR experience
  • Cannulation and administration of IV drugs
  • Experience of shift coordinator duties
  • Experience in Interventional Radiology
  • Clinical experience in other imaging modalities
  • Ability to work autonomously or part of a team
  • Portfolio evidence of CPD
  • To carry out audit and contribute to clinical governance
  • Ability and commitment to perform IV cannulation and administer drugs
  • Ability to work across professional and organizational boundaries
  • Extensive clinical and technical knowledge in Trauma, acute, and general Radiography, including Interventional Radiology
