**Job summary**:
This Senior Simulation Modeller post will lead on the design, build, execution and maintenance of bespoke scientific software concerning animal disease control in the UK, with a focus on models simulating national animal disease spread, surveillance and management. The outputs from this work support important capabilities concerning animal disease control in the UK.

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. Our diverse teams of over 2,000 skilled and committed professionals come together to provide research, advice and support to UK Government for safeguarding animal, public and plant health for benefit of the environment and economy.

**Job description**:
Key areas of work will include:

- Developing, maintaining, and running bespoke software and associated IT infrastructure for modelling and data science projects.
- Building and maintaining team skills, capabilities and culture around software development and scientific computing, including technical collaboration, reproducibility, and quality assurance.
- Leading software development projects: working with customers, collaborators, and suppliers to translate business challenges into deliverable technical objectives and ensuring delivery on time and budget.
- Using collaborative approaches to provide transparency and assurance at all stages of project delivery.
- Working with multidisciplinary project teams to ensure timely delivery of outputs including the production of reports, scientific papers, presentations, and project proposals.
- Effectively balancing time between the maintenance of legacy systems and the development of innovative systems to enhance capability.

The post holder may have line management responsibilities.

**Person specification**:
Required Experience and Skills:

- A proven track record of software development for simulation modelling, using a programming language such as Python, Java, C/C++, Rust.
- Demonstrable scientific computing experience including quality assurance, data analysis and communication of technical outputs.
- Experience of project leadership; leading on requirements gathering, stakeholder relationship and delivery.

Out of hours work may be required in the event of an incident and in relation to international stakeholder engagement.

Some travel will be required to attend training courses and meetings. You must have a valid driving licence or be able to call upon suitable alternate means of transport.
