**Job summary**:
The first duty of the government is to keep citizens safe and the country secure. The Home Office has been at the front line of this endeavour since 1782. As such, the Home Office plays a vital role in the security and economic prosperity of the United Kingdom.
The Home Office mission is fundamentally important to keep Britain’s streets safe and its borders secure. Each and every member of the Home Office plays a part in making that happen.

The International Strategy, Engagement, and Devolution Directorate (ISED) sits within the centre of the Home Office. It sets and maintains the international strategic direction for the Home Office, solving complex cross-cutting problems and leveraging international opportunities to support, deliver and inform Home Office activity.

We actively embrace diversity and promote equality of opportunity, to enable us to reflect the communities that we serve. We provide people with the opportunity to work at pace and deliver in stretching roles. You will learn a lot in your day-to-day work - but we also provide excellent wider learning and development opportunities.

**Job description**:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Overseas Territories Team within ISED. We are currently recruiting a desk officer to join our engagement team to reflect the growing interest in the Overseas Territories (OTs), across the Home Office and UK Government (UKG) more broadly. The desk officer role can be based at the listed locations, but occasional travel to London and other UK locations will be required.

This is a fast-paced and stimulating role within a small but supportive and friendly team. The role provides opportunities to engage at the highest levels and represent the Department, including travel to key meetings to support Ministers and senior officials.
This desk officer role differs to the typical desk officer roles advertised as it encompasses a mixture of policy, strategy and engagement. It will be great for someone who wants a new stretching role, is self-motivated and make a difference in our efforts with the OTs.

The post holder will need to build up an understanding of the overseas territories and stay abreast of Home Office policy developments which may impact or influence our footprint domestically and overseas. The post holder will be in the privileged position of looking across the full breadth of the Home Office’s responsibilities so will be exposed to a wide range of policy areas. This is demanding but rewarding work and, while the post holder will be stretched at times, they will be supported by the team and wider directorate.

The post holder will manage their own portfolio of OTs, and will be one of the main points of contact for the Home Office’s engagement with the UK’s OTs and with key partners across Whitehall and operational law enforcement.

Due to the nature of the role, this post is available on a full-time basis only and with the possibility of compressed hours.

**Person specification**:
Responsibilities include:

- Act as the first point of contact for all queries and related issues for the department in relation to agreed portfolios.
- Support and lead cross cutting Home Office engagement at working level with portfolio countries, working closely with internal and external partners.
- Develop and maintain strong network of internal government stakeholders ensuring key policy and operational teams in the HO remain up to date.
- Horizon scan for engagement opportunities for ministers and senior officials to drive forward HO objectives.
- Support team leader who has oversight of wider portfolio, and the work of the wider team with irregular requests where appropriate.
- Given the often-changing priorities and fast paced nature of the policy area, post holder will need to be adaptable and flexible, effectively prioritising work and often at pace.

The post holder will be encouraged to take at least 5 days of learning and development a year. A wide range of learning opportunities are available through job-related experiences, interactions with others and formal educational events and programmes. These include the opportunity to work with people at all grades in every aspect of the Home Office’s portfolio, to shadow people in areas that will support your professional development and to occasionally provide cover in Ministerial private offices.

Due to the nature of the role, this post is available on a full-
