ROLE PURPOSE:
To provide counselling services to students at ACM London in line with the job description below.

Counsellors liaise with Targeted Support Specialists, the Head of Counselling and the Group Lead on Student Experience.

ACM’s counselling policy makes provision for four initial sessions. At the end of the first four sessions there are two options:
1. The student is referred back to universal level support or to an alternative in-house specialist

support provider

2. The student is offered up to two further sessions as assessed by the counsellor to complete agreed areas of work Where longer term counselling is recommended beyond six sessions, counsellors liaise with the clinical need to assess risk and agree on a maximum of four additional ‘holding’ support session while an onward referral to an appropriate external support agency is arranged.

Note: Students are assessed and triaged for counselling within the wellbeing team. Counselling appointments will subsequently be offered to the student at the earliest opportunity depending on matching schedules. Referral information is provided to the counsellor with a brief history of the student problems disclosed during triage. Students who fail to attend two counselling sessions without valid reason or effective communication are to be referred back to the wellbeing team for alternative support.

**MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- To provide an independent, professional and confidential counselling service to students at ACM through individual sessions, responding to their personal, social, emotional or educational concerns in line with ACM’s Counsellor Services Contract 2019.
- To promote a safe, caring and supportive environment where such concerns may be explored, thereby promoting the mental and emotional health of students at ACM
- To contract with the student at the outset of their therapy to inform them of the nature and boundaries of the counselling relationship
- To liaise with the wellbeing team and other professionals as appropriate to ensure the effective operation of the service
- To maintain confidentiality (except in those circumstances, in line with BACP/UKCP practice and the ACM Counsellor Contract, where this should be breached)
- To uphold good practice as described by the BACP/UKCP ethical guidelines.
- To be responsible for their own Professional Liability Insurance, Professional Development maintenance and updating knowledge and awareness through Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- To undertake enhanced DBS checks
- To make referrals, where appropriate and with the student’s consent, to other agencies.
- To share information with ACM in line with the Counsellor contractual guidelines, where a student is deemed to be at significant risk of harm
- To maintain appropriate records and to keep these secure in accordance with the latest

GDPR guidelines

In addition, the counsellors will:

- Update the confidential counselling booking calendar each week to indicate which sessions have been attended
- Notify the relevant member of the student services team of their availability immediately where they can offer a new student an appointment
