London, United Kingdom King's College London Full time

Job description

This 2-year Research Fellow position is to support a mid-career researcher with interest and experience in experimental studies (i.e. experienced post-doc/research fellow) to develop their research credentials in studies of substance use and associated problems, especially of heroin/opioid overdose and risk of overdose death. Working directly with Professor Strang and colleagues, the Research Fellow will be responsible for finalising development of human experimental studies of the acute effects of opioids, characteristics of opioid overdose and its reversal, and exploration of wearable technology. The Research Fellow will also drive development of the ethics and regulatory approvals as well as coordinating and conducting the experimental investigations, both within the purpose-built Clinical Research facility and also in community settings. The scope of research will include liaison and consultation with drug user groups and also family groups. In this post, the appointee can expect to become an increasingly influential research academic contributing to study of opioids (or other drugs) and to evolution of addictions science and public policy in this area.

It is anticipated that the appointee will develop to a level where they are capable of securing, in collaboration with senior colleagues, new grant income for future extension of this body of work.

The appointee will work directly with Professor Sir John Strang and his colleagues, exploring treatment-related and experimental research studies which will include (i) experimental study of heroin overdose and its reversal (ii) experimental laboratory and observational studies of novel wearable technology (iii) survey and qualitative work investigating the acceptability of new overdose emergency responses. This work will consequently build on recent work from the National Addiction Centre (NAC). In addition, the Research Fellow will contribute to examination and study of wider research and public policy, and the planning and delivery of dissemination events.

The post-holder will also be expected to contribute to educational activities within the Department, including contributing to support and teaching for students on our Addictions MSc, and also an Addictions research newsletter with synopses of key research outputs and impacts.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31/05/25. Continuation of appointment beyond this point will be dependent on securing new grant income.

- To contribute to Addictions/Substance use training within the Department (including the Addictions MSc) as well as more widely

Decision Making, Planning and Problem Solving
- To deal with problems effectively as they arise
- To demonstrate appropriate time management techniques
- To ensure compliance with protocol guidelines and research governance
- To show ability to work independently but under the supervision of more senior staff

- To ensure timely and accurate data entry from study sessions onto computerised database
- To undertake quantitative data analyses in discussion with Professor Strang and other colleagues within Addictions
