**Background**

Business is the engine of the UK economy around two thirds of UK R&D is performed in industry. High quality research and development fuel economic growth and the creation of skills, high-value jobs and entrepreneurial businesses in our knowledge-driven economy. This means that the flow of ideas and skills between the research base, business, public and charity sectors is crucial to future prosperity.

The Society has established a science, industry and translation programme to promote industrial science and translation. It aims to bring together industry, academia and government to advance ideas and support scientists in industry and those in academia who wish to commercialise their research. The programme covers a broad range of academic disciplines and industrial sectors. Activities include a regional conference series and a scientific meeting series, bringing together representatives from industry, academia and government to discuss major scientific and technical challenges. The Society also funds industry fellowships to support researcher mobility and an Entrepreneur in Residence programme placing experienced entrepreneurs and industry scientists in UK universities.

**The role of Head of Industry Engagement**

The Society is looking to recruit an energetic, organised and innovative individual to lead the development of its science, industry and translation programme to create greater engagement between the Society and industrial science, to help promote the development of an entrepreneurial mind-set amongst the research community and to work with academia and industry to support translation and provide evidence for increased investment in the science base.

This will include working with Fellows of the Society with industry connections, current and past Industry award holders and a broader group of scientists with translation interests as well as a range of partner organisations who share the same aims. It will also involve working with colleagues in the Society to ensure that the industry voice is incorporated across the Society’s activities including in the advice it provides to policy makers and its STEM education programmes, particularly with a view to addressing skills gaps in UK science.

**Reports to**: Programme Director, Industry and Sector Engagement

**Line manages**: 2 Programme Managers, 1 Senior Officer, 2 Officers and 2 Assistants

**Location**:Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AG plus hybrid remote working, and the expectation of some travel across the UK.

**Pay Band**: F

**Salary**: £70,000- £76,882 per annum

**Contract type**: Permanent

**Hours**: 35 hours per week (full time) with some flexibility around working hours given the nature of the role.

**Responsibilities**:

- Key responsibilities_
- Leading, developing and delivering the industry and translation programme of activities as agreed by the Science, Industry and Translation Committee.
- Building robust and high level networks amongst different industrial sectors, universities and partner organisations with an interest in industry and translation.
- Ensuring that industrial science is embedded into the core activities of the Royal Society and that the Society is regarded as a leading supporter of industry and translation.
- Managing the Industry Engagement team within the Society

Key Knowledge and Skills Required:
**The person**

The Head of Industry Engagement will require a demonstrable passion for supporting innovative businesses and researchers, considerable personal energy, sound judgement, strong written and oral communication skills and must be a willing and able team player. The individual must be able to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders and command their respect.
- Skills and experience_
- Extensive experience of working in or with Industry Research and Development teams or in a university or technology organisation with a track record of translating research ideas into commercial products.
- Demonstrable track record of developing and implementing projects.
- Demonstrable track record of developing effective relationships with multiple stakeholders and partnership working.
- The ability to motivate and grow high performing teams.
