We are looking for a lead for our team of laboratory assistants within the molecular pathology section within our busy Cellular Pathology laboratory

You will be leading a team helping to process samples and supporting the scientific and medical staff to provide a service to cancer patients to ensure that they receive their results in a timely manner

You will work in the molecular pathology area of the Cellular Pathology Laboratory, co-ordinating the roles of the medical laboratory assistant (MLA) and clerical/administration team. You will be involved in provision of the technical service.

You will be checking that the correct sample type has been received, correct sample labelling and suitability for diagnostic investigations, in accordance with Pathology laboratory policies and standard operating procedures

You will be inputting data on the laboratory computer system and trouble-shooting issues that may arise

You will rotate with the molecular and immunohistochemistry areas of the laboratory providing support and leadership to the MLA and clerical/administration team

You will be ensuring that the Department meets cancer targets and you will need to have experience of working in a team

You will liaise with external centres to ensure a smooth referral process for samples

The Molecular Pathology section within the Cellular Pathology Department is based within the Pathology Department at Cheltenham General Hospital and is one of the biggest within the South West.

We have a team of medical staff, scientists and support staff working in a busy environment and are focused on providing a high quality efficient service

Work in the molecular and immunohistochemistry sections of the department

Co-ordinate the activities of clerical/administration, MLA staff to support the molecular pathology services.

Participate in the reception, preparation and documentation of specimens for immuno histochemical and genomic testing in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols

Participate in specimen processing and the production of histology sections for microscopic examination, immunohistochemistry and genomic testing. This includes, microtomy, staining and microscopy

Input test requests, including tests, patient demographics, requesting clinician and location for report onto the laboratory computer system in a timely fashion in order to maintain efficient workflow and laboratory turnaround times and taking into account the urgency of the request

Participate in the training and teaching of trainee Healthcare Scientists, MLAs and other healthcare professionals

Communicate across centres both regionally and nationally to ensure a smooth referral process for samples

Undertake and maintain CPD to ensure up-to-date knowledge as directed by their line managers
