**Your role and responsibilities**

The Alternative Tuition Service at Suffolk County Council are seeking to employ a suitably qualified individual to support the Service with checking pupils who are not engaging with their education during the time of permanent exclusion from school (PEX).

**Key Responsibilities**
- Making visits to families to discuss engagement and support needs during this time.
- Working alongside children, young people, parents and families where there are early signs of social, emotional, health or behavioural issues to bring about sustainable improvement.
- Identifying risks and safeguarding concerns and escalating immediately where appropriate.
- Working within the service guidelines, statutory guidance and legal frameworks.
- Responding to needs identified with the family.
- Working closely with Child Employment and Entertainment, Child Missing Education, Social Care, Early Help, Youth Justice Service, Family Services, Public Health and Police.
- Supporting families with complex problems where statutory intervention is required under the guidance of a Social Worker, Lead Professional or Health Colleagues as appropriate.
- Engaging in individual and group supervision with managers and practice leads
- Where required by the role, acting as Lead Professional for named families as directed by colleagues, being the key contact with the family and liaising with other professionals to provide a joined-up response.
- Making education welfare checks at various locations and home addresses of families. This may be with the police under the Crime and Disorder Act, or as a duty of care under safeguarding legislation. This will involve questioning young people and their parents/carers to establish the child’s safety and the reason they are not engaging with ATS.
- Providing information and signposting for children, young people and families to relevant universal and specialist services in the local area and beyond where appropriate.

**You will need**
- Ability to recognise Child Protection and risk issues and alert concerns to manager.
- Empathy and resilience to deal with managing parents and families under pressure.
- Proven use of effective communication to de-escalate challenging situations and provide appropriate advice and facilitation.
- Proven ability to make constructive contribution to meetings and negotiate with a range of stakeholders, settings and contexts.
- Experience of solution focused approaches in practice.
- Relevant experience of working directly with children, young people and their families.

Alternative Tuition Service is Suffolk County Council’s statutory education service and provides an education for all children and young people who are permanently excluded from school.

We are a friendly team who work together to best support the children we are working with. Our base at Montgomery Rd, Ipswich is staffed every day in term-time.
