- UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) is looking for a Semantic Data Specialist to develop and implement semantic web approaches that will advance data interoperability and metadata management across our broad and diverse digital assets. You’ll join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

Join the Environmental Data Science (EDS) group in Lancaster, a dynamic multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) to support collaborative and integrative environmental science. You will focus on semantic web techniques, including vocabularies and ontologies, to promote the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles across various digital assets, such as data, models, methods, and services. You’ll also be an advocate for these FAIR principles within UKCEH, the NERC Environmental Data Service, and the broader environmental science community.

Your main responsibilities will include:
- Employing solutions to implement FAIR principles for a range of UKCEH digital assets using semantic web approaches-
- Evaluating and extending our capabilities in the use of vocabularies and ontologies to promote a linked open data approach to describing digital assets-
- Working with the EDS software developers to design and implement software and systems required for successful semantic web approaches-
- Advocating semantic web approaches both within and outside the organisation, including disseminating best practices through reports/publications and developing engagement activities for environmental scientists-
- Working with the broader science community, including NERC's Environmental Data Service to ensure UKCEH DRI activities align with external initiatives nationally and internationally-
- Keeping abreast of emerging trends and advancements in semantic technologies and knowledge representationFor the role of Semantic Data Specialist, we’re looking for somebody who has:
- Knowledge and experience of semantic technologies such as graph databases/ triple stores, RDF, OWL, SPARQL-
- Experience in the use of semantic web approaches, including principles and practices to support the discovery, use and interoperability of digital assets-
- Experience of understanding complex data models and translating them into scalable solutions-
- Interest in Research Data Management and enhancing FAIR principles for digital assets in DRI-
- An ability to rapidly understand new systems, infrastructures and tools-
- The ability to collaborate with others and present work clearly to a variety of audiences (including non-specialists)-
- A strong desire to work collaboratively in a research and development environment on DRI for environmental science-
- Experience of Agile software development processes (Desirable)-
- Experienced in Python, R, Java and/or JavaScript (Desirable)-
- Experience of Research Data Management frameworks/Data Commons (Desirable)-
