**Job summary**:
The Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff organisation leads the development of RN strategy, through a strategic balance of investment process, manages RN engagement with Ministers, the Ministry of Defence, Parliament, the other Front-Line Commands, allied Navies, Other Government Departments, the Maritime Enterprise, academia and think tanks and the general public; developing and coordinating corresponding Navy policy.
The Deputy Director: Policy & Engagement leads the RN’s domestic and international engagement, including with other services, Defence, allied navies, Parliament and across Whitehall. The Deputy Director: Policy & Engagement also leads on providing accurate and timely information in response to Parliamentary Questions, Ministerial correspondence and, where appropriate, treat Official responses to members of the public. As part of developing the RN’s strategic thinking network, the area also provides specialist expertise in historical, contemporary and academic perspectives on defence and security to enhance policy work.
The Naval Historical Branch uses specialist knowledge of historical and contemporary naval issues, in the context of a broader understanding of wider defence and security policy, to inform RN policy and strategy.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
**Job description**:
The Senior Researcher will deliver high quality research across a wide variety of historical and contemporary topics relevant to RN policy and operations, to deliver outputs on time and to a high standard of presentation. Under strategic guidance the role will also_ _be responsible for the day-to-day co-ordination of the NHB’s ‘Red Team’ work, helping to maximise the effect of this challenge function on behalf of the RN senior leadership team.
The post holder will:
- Research, assess and present information on Royal Navy history and contemporary naval and defence issues for RN senior leadership team.
- Research, assess and present information on Royal Navy history and contemporary naval and defence issues for principal customers including Ministers and the Central policy community.
- Prepare reports, assessments and evidence as directed on Royal Navy topics, but also on wider naval and defence topics when required.
- Co-ordinate and support NHB red teaming of key policy activities, including of policy documents from internal/external sources, to ensure effective thought leadership.
- Be the primary POC for NHB as ITSO.
- Maintain and develop a network across relevant Royal Navy organisations, including effective liaison.
- Work in an agile way to bring people, processes, connectivity and technology together to maximise effect.
ACNS 2* area employs agile working to deliver business outputs; as a member of a Scrum team, the role will work in an agile way to deliver team outputs, as prioritised by the team’s Product Owner.

- Degree level qualification in History or another relevant field.
