JOB SUMMARY The Patient flow and bed management service will have overall management of the acute wards demand and capacity on a day to day basis and senior level responsibility for patient flow. This includes the management of associated resources and budgets. The post holder will be responsible for the management of all inpatient beds and to ensure the safe admissions for Adult Acute patients across the Trust. The postholder will be required to interpret national and local policies and guidance and will provide advice on how they should be interpreted by staff in the patient flow teams ensuring the highest professional standards are maintained at all times.

The postholder will ensure the highest standards of patient flow are provided and that the principles of clinical governance are implemented, utilising their authority and judgement to solve immediate operational problems. They will ensure that timely escalation process is embedded within the BDUs, across the organisation and the whole system. The post holder will take the lead in ensuring that analysis on bed usage, demand and capacity for admissions is understood, that data is collated and that trends are mapped and communicated to General Manager. The Post holder will be accountable for their decision making and take responsibility for ensuring admissions are made to an appropriate environment with the safety of the patient, carer and staff member as paramount.

The post holder will work as part of a collective senior leadership team working alongside the general manager & modern matrons to achieve patient safety and regulatory assurance, whilst leading, innovating and managing the development of improved governance, performance and quality improvement both within each BDU and where appropriate Trustwide. The postholder will be easily identifiable to patients, provide strong leadership through a visible presence and provide support, advice and assistance required by staff at all levels and within the health and social care system. KEY RESULT AREAS: The postholder will: Lead, motivate and develop staff in all aspects of effective admission and discharge planning. Focus on ensuring that they develop excellent communication skills with all inpatient wards, Team Leaders, Modern Matrons, Medical staff and the General Manager for Acute Care.

Will ensure that there is up to date, visible and accessible information available at all times on occupancy levels, admissions and discharges and that all digital solutions to patient flow are developed and utilised to support this. Ensure that Operational Pressure Escalation levels (OPEL) are embedded and contribute to the implementation of safer staffing and internal professional standards at ward level and ensure that escalation processes are part of the operational meeting structures. Have responsibility for ensuring that all patients have a registered GP within the Trust footprint and have been gate-kept for an admission as per Trust policy.
