The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary research team in our NIHR Patient Safety Collaborative (PSRC), based in our School of Pharmacy. You will have an interest in polypharmacy, social care and inequalities. You will work with experts in traditional and realist evidence synthesis approaches, to identify ‘what works’ for patient safety in polypharmacy in community/social care settings and develop a longitudinal qualitative research study. This role offers a unique opportunity to make an impact on an overlooked area of research, whilst developing a career in applied health and social care research.

Most patients with polypharmacy are not under close observation in hospitals. They live in their own homes (some with support from paid or unpaid carers), in warden controlled or extra care housing, assisted living, or care homes. It follows that social care and community services play a critical role in the lives of many people who take multiple medications. Our project will identify key risks, intervention points and actions in domestic and social care settings, with a focus on the needs and benefits for people living in disadvantaged circumstances. This work intends to benefit a high proportion of the polypharmacy population and inform patient safety policy and practice across health and social care.

This post is fixed term for a period of 24 months with a possible extension of a further 12 months.

Key Accountabilities
Although working under the general guidance of an academic or Principal Investigator, the postholder will contribute ideas, including enhancements to the technical or methodological aspects of their studies, thus providing substantial 'added value'
Undertake and contribute to public/patient involvement/engagement (PPIE) for research undertaken in this Polypharmacy Theme
Work in collaboration with and support an integrated approach to and engagement with the Public and Patient involvement leads
Develop and carry out the specified project using appropriate techniques and equipment as outlined in the personal requirements
Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support where required
Begin to write, with appropriate support, proposals for individual research funding or, where funders do not permit this, contribute to the writing of collective bids
Assess research findings for the need/scope for further investigations
Contribute to the writing up of their research for publication and dissemination, either through seminar and conference presentations or through publications
Present research findings, either at conferences or through publications in reputable outlets appropriate to the discipline
May be involved in the supervision, with guidance, of final year undergraduate research projects and in providing support to postgraduate research students or Research Assistants
Will need to work with the support staff and, on occasions, with undergraduate and postgraduate students, and interact intellectually with other academic members of the Institute
May contribute to events celebrating the public engagement of science/social sciences/humanities
Develop an awareness of University structures, policies and procedures and relevant issues in the higher education, research, social and political environment
Experience and/or understanding of public/patient involvement/engagement in research

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Ability to work well as part of a team and rapidly acquire new skills
Advanced skills directly related to the research projects
Knowledge and experience of appropriate research methods for collection and /or analysis of data. This should include the following, relevant to health and wellbeing of older adults and/or UK social care settings:
Experience of qualitative research and / or mixed methods, AND
Expertise in evidence synthesis approaches.
