The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a research team based at Newcastle University (Dr Felicity Dewhurst, Dr Marie Poole and Prof Barbara Hanratty, working with:
Manchester University (Dr Louise Tomkow), The London School of Economics (Professor Martin Knapp and Josie Dixon) and expert lay co-applicants (Malcolm Ngouala and Margaret Ogden).

This project is "Diverse Experiences of End of Life care for Dementia - Establishing Consensus and Capacity through Collaboration and Co-production" funded by the
National Institute for Health and Care Research Three Schools Dementia Research Programme for Improving the Lives of People Living with Dementia and Carers.

This innovative study utilises co-production with lay co-applicants to identify the important research questions and associated methodology needed to explore the end of life experiences of people with dementia from diverse backgrounds including ethnic minority groups and those experiencing poverty who are less likely to experience good end of life care.

This role will require you to review existing literature and research, and collect and analyse qualitative data at workshops (video conferencing and face to face). You will use a range of research methodologies including scoping review, co-design and production and qualitative observations and interviews. Working with the research team from Newcastle and Manchester Universities and the London School of Economics, you will be responsible for organising stakeholder workshops, data collection, the analysis of the qualitative data, and work with the team to produce materials for publication and dissemination.

You will be expected to manage your own time and plan activities, to ensure that the broad, strategic aims of the project are being met. You will need to work to tight deadlines and be extremely organised in delivering the work. You will be supported to manage the qualitative work on a day-to-day basis, guided by the overall research plan and time-table, and working closely with Dr Felicity Dewhurst and Dr Marie Poole at Newcastle University, and Co-PI Dr Louise Tomkow and at the University of Manchester.

This is a full time post, fixed term until 31 January 2024

Key Accountabilities
- You will take a leading role in the study conduct, including data collection and analysis, to ensure the aims and objectives of the study are addressed. This will include the following tasks
- Leading on a scoping review of existing evidence on end of life dementia care for people from diverse backgrounds
- Gaining ethical approval
- Planning and recruiting participants, working with our partner organisations to ensure the voices of a diverse group of people are heard.
- Organising and attending co-design workshops with our expert stakeholders
- Working with our experts by experience including our lay co-applicants and expert stakeholder group
- Taking a central role in data collection and data analysis using appropriate co-design and qualitative methodologies
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records to document the research progress. Report progress regularly to the PI and other members of the team in Newcastle, Manchester and London
- Writing up of data for reports to funder and peer reviewed publications (as first author where appropriate), presenting data at group meetings and conferences, and preparing feedback for participants

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience - Experience of conducting high quality research in an academic environment
- Experience of conducting applied health research in the areas of end of life care
- Experience of conducting evidence synthesis and qualitative data collection, analysis and reporting
- Ability to carry out research project work within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and producing research to an appropriate standard
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect research/personal data according to protocols and principles of good research practice
- Ability to work in teams, across disciplines
- Ability to prepare reports and papers for presentation at national and international conferences and meetings
- Evidence of ability to write for high quality peer reviewed publications
- Ability to present findings at leading health, public health and social science conferences
- Evidence of skills in empirical research involving primary data collection using qualitative techniques
- Evidence of skills in using relevant software data management packages
