The Department of Clinical Chemistry comprises a team of 80 staff who are committed to delivering an efficient, high quality diagnostic service. It is a busy, friendly department. We have an excellent reputation as a specialist laboratory and provide a comprehensive metabolic analytical service along with regional bloodspot newborn screening and acute biochemistry.
We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join us as a Clerical Officer. This role is based in the Newborn Screening Section and the hours of work are 11.25 per week. We need someone to work between 13:15 and 17:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The Newborn Screening Clerical Officer is an important role for entering patient demographics into the computer system and performing other administrative duties that support the processing and reporting of around 75,000 bloodspot cards received annually.
- Provide a clerical service to the Regional Newborn Screening laboratory
- Enter patient demographics into the Specimen Gate laboratory computer system
- Carry out a range of clerical duties in support of the service

- Receipt, processing, storage and retrieval of specimens (NBS cards) in the Newborn Screening Laboratory
- Entering of confidential patient information into the Specimen Gate laboratory computer system.
- Scanning information into the Specimen Gate laboratory computer system.
- Liaising with District Child Health departments over specimen related issues under the supervision of the Office Supervisor. These will include follow up of poor demographic information on requests and identification of repeat requests.
- Creation of repeat request letters using the Specimen Gate laboratory computer system under the supervision of the Office Supervisor
- Providing clerical support for the main Clinical Chemistry office as directed by the Office Supervisor
- Dealing with a wide range of local and national telephone calls and enquiries to the department. This will involve dealing with parent and hospital enquiries regarding screening test results and referral of complex enquiries to the appropriate senior staff in the department
- Receipt, opening and distribution of post for the Newborn Screening Laboratory
- General clerical and administrative duties appropriate to the section
Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network. The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.
