The Role

Are you a highly motivated individual with a prior research background in Biointerface engineering? The School of Engineering at Newcastle University could be the place for you.

You should hold a PhD for Associate Level (or nearing completion for Assistant Level) in mechanical engineering, biomedical Engineering, materials engineering or a closely related discipline.

The appointment is fixed-term, tenable for 6 months in the first instance from July 2023. The position is available on a full-time basis (37 hours per week).

Key Accountabilities
Quantify bacteria attachment
Measure bacteria-materials adhesion
Quantify biofilm formation in static and dynamic culture conditions
Determine biofilm mechanics
Write reports and publication and disseminate results to both academic and industrial communities
Contribute to writing bids to win ongoing research grants. Provide guidance to other staff and students interested in integrating methods/results from this work into their own activity to ensure most effective use, particularly within Newcastle University and external collaborators

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Practical experience in bacteria culture
Proven track record in design and manufacture microfluidics
Proven track record in droplet dynamics and surface wetting
Demonstrable experience of construction of experimental set-ups
Experience biofilm imaging analysis
Proven track record of research in computational fluid dynamics
Ability to present your work orally and in writing with a very good publication record.
Good communication skills, both written and spoken English
Demonstrable critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Ability to work with others at all levels
Ability to contribute ideas and initiate new ways of working
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
Desirable
Experience in antimicrobial surface or antifouling surface
Experience biofilm imaging analysis
Experience of student project supervision
Experience in Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
Attributes and Behaviour
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present research outcomes and the ability to work with others with different background
Ability to work under pressure and meet agreed milestones
Ability to complete tasks independently and timely
Ability to work as a member of a dedicated research group, in a collaborative manner with team colleagues at all levels

Experience of working in a diverse and multidisciplinary team
Being able to prioritise own work in response to deadlines
Being able to motivate others to produce a high standard of work

**Qualifications**:
Hold a PhD for Associate level (or ready to submit PhD thesis for Assistant level) in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, materials engineering, or relevant disciplines
