**requirements.
**MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST**
To assist in providing a comprehensive pensions service for South Wales Fire
& Rescue Service, with regards employer responsibilities in the governance
and administration of the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme(s) and the Local
Government Pension Schemed in Wales.
Also, to assist with implementing the Service’s action plan, as part of its
governance related responsibilities for pension related matters and provide
support to the Pensions Liaison Officers, Scheme Manager, Pensions
Administrators and Members of the Local Pension Board, when required.
Supporting the Pensions Liaison Officers in delivering a number of national
pensions related projects driven by changes to pensions legislation will be key
to this role.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure that employee and employer pension contributions are
calculated and deducted correctly through the Service’s payroll
system, on a monthly basis, checking that the appropriate rules
have been applied across the different schemes, i.e., Local
Government and Fire Pension Schemes.
- In conjunction with the payroll team and the monthly payroll cycles
ensure that employees post/salary changes are reflected correctly
within their individual pension records, in order that the system can
calculate the correct pension contributions for both the Service and
the employee.

- Monitor and maintain, through the Services payroll system, the
governments Auto Enrolment procedure on a monthly basis and
also on a 3 yearly renewals basis.

- Responsible for providing, to our pension scheme administrators,
on a monthly basis, all information relating to starters and leavers of
the Local Government Pension Scheme and Firefighter Pension
Scheme(s).
- Responsible for ensuring that regular reviews are undertaken that
enable checks to be carried out that ascertain the correct
management of member pension schemes. This may take the form
of a suit of reports designed to check pension end dates, employee
pension scheme overrides, occupational absences etc., although
other methods may be need to visited periodically.
- Support the Pensions Liaison Officers with producing and
publishing regular communications, for all staff, on matters relating
to pensions. This will include communications via the Services
monthly magazine, Service wide updates and Routine Notice as
well as project or scheme specific communications directly to
pension scheme members, whether active, deferred or pensioner.
- Responsible for the management and maintenance of the Services
Death in Service Scheme and liaise closely with the Payroll
Manager and the Finance Department should an event trigger the
need for a payment to be made.
- Support the Pensions Liaison Officers in ensuring that the Annual
End of Year Pension Returns are fully reconciled, and appropriate
adjustments made prior to it being provided to our pension scheme
administrators. This is a deadline driven exercise and the Service,
as the Scheme Manager, has a legal obligation to ensure that this
information is provided in order that our pensions scheme
administrator can produce Annual Benefit Statements to our
pension members by the legal deadline.
- Ensure that the Services Pensions intranet pages are kept updated,
ensuring that articles and information are accurate and relevant.
- Support the Pension Liaison Officers in delivering local and national
pension related exercises. Currently to include, implementation of
the McCloud and O’Brien remedy exercises, the implementation of
the Pensions Dashboard Project and any other pension project
workstreams that arise.
- Co-ordinate the Service’s Pre-Retirement and Annual Allowance
courses, liaising with both internal and external stakeholders i.e.,
Financial Advisors, Course Providers, Cardiff Gate Training Centre,

- To be a visible, readily available, accessible point of contact, to
serving and retired members of the Service.
- Maintain an understanding of all Service Pension Schemes and
their regulations and assist the Service in liaising with its Pensions
