The Highways & Built County service sits within the Economy, Infrastructure and Skills directorate. Its purpose is to manage, maintain and sustainably improve Staffordshire's Built Environment so that amongst other things it is safe, accessible, functions well, promotes inward investment and economic growth, and supports social cohesion and healthy lifestyle choices.

Within the Highways & Built County service, sits Highway Information Management, which is central to much of the data and information created, improved and managed concerning the County's highway network. The multi-disciplinary team works in partnership with many other stakeholders including District Councils, Government bodies, the Council's strategic delivery partner Amey, and many internal highway teams. Its functions include a variety of data creation and analysis, information management and improvement activities, concerning Traffic Data, records of the extent of the adopted highway, asset management and the National Street Gazetteer.

Main Responsibilities

This is a varied role, which will allow you to develop your interest and skills concerning data and information management within a highways setting. Your role will involve:

  • Day to day support and management of the data held in the county's National Street Gazetteer
  • Analysis, interpretation and determination of the extent of the highway
  • Digitising new spatial data from a variety of sources
  • Contributing to asset data improvement projects which support development opportunities for the way in which the county's highway network is managed
  • Liaison with District Councils and other interested bodies
  • Reviewing and understanding national data standards
  • Data validation and manipulation activities using a range of software, maps and plans
The Ideal Candidate

You will be enthusiastic, innovative and resilient, whilst working well both in multi-disciplinary teams and on your own initiative. You will be an excellent communicator, who is able to prioritise a varied workload with conflicting deadlines.

You'll also have some of the following:

  • Eye for detail and accuracy
  • Interest in collecting, analysing and interpreting digital information and data to inform decisions
  • Experience in map reading or using GIS (Geographical Information Systems) data and systems
  • Experience of utilising software packages effectively (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, etc)
  • Experience of working with multiple stakeholders
  • Basic understanding or experience of Local Government
