Muon Instrument Scientist

Didcot, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom STFC - The Science and Technology Facilities Council Full time

Muon Instrument Scientist (Radio-Frequency Resonance Techniques for Muons)

Hours: Full time or Part time (min 25h)

Location: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire

We have an exciting opportunity for a scientist with experience of magnetic resonance, but perhaps new to the muon technique, to join our group. You will be responsible for developing novel radio-frequency (RF) spin resonance techniques for new experimental methods using muons, likely exploiting concepts from NMR and EPR. The role will also require you to take a lead in developing novel instrumentation to support your work. Resonance techniques are already making a valuable contribution in this field; this is therefore an excellent opportunity for you to get involved in state-of-the-art research and to make your mark in this fast-developing field.

You will join us as an Instrument Scientist within ISIS Neutron & Muon Source, a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments gives unique insights into the properties of materials at the atomic scale. We support a national and international community of more than 3000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology and materials engineering, catalysis and polymers and on to fundamental studies of materials.

You will work with colleagues developing new experimental techniques and collaborate with research groups coming to ISIS. Working with in-house technicians, you will provide support and scientific guidance to researchers visiting ISIS, to help them get the best from their experiments. You will develop your own research programme (with opportunities for joint supervision of students), take a lead in developing and promoting RF resonance techniques for muon experiments, and publish your work to make an impact in your field.

About you

To succeed in this role, you will be educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in a relevant science area, have a track record of research, and a strong interest in scientific instrumentation. You will be keen to take forward a relevant scientific research programme, which will include the use of muon spectroscopy (and perhaps other techniques) to solve problems in your area of research. You are likely to have some understanding of RF resonance techniques and be able apply them to muon spectroscopy, and be keen to promote resonance techniques to the scientific community.

What we offer

Choosing to come to work at UKRI means that you will have access to a whole host of benefits including:

  • a flexible working scheme
  • a Career Average Revalued Earnings pension scheme
  • 30 days annual leave allowance (in addition to 10.5 bank holidays and privilege days),
  • employee shopping/travel discounts and salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme,
  • excellent learning and development opportunities
