Development of Particle Detectors for Neutron and Muon Beamlines Industrial Placement

We are seeking two students to join our Detector Systems Group, a multi-disciplinary team of scientists developing cutting-edge detector technologies for the ISIS neutron and muon source.
Key Responsibilities- Contribute to the development and evaluation of new detector technologies for neutron and muon instruments
- Work alongside experienced detector scientists to design and construct prototype detectors
- Experimentally determine the characteristics of detectors and optimize their design
- Evaluate the performance of detectors using beam time on an ISIS instrument
- Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
- Required or have requested to take an industrial placement year
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- Able to commence employment in summer
- Studying for a degree in physics or another physics-related degree
- Ability to work independently and engage in self-motivated learning
- Enjoy problem-solving and pursuing an experimental development program
- Able to analyze data and draw conclusions
- Demonstrate scientific computing-related skills
- Have good communication skills, both verbal and written
- Be willing to work with ionizing radiation
- Knowledge of ionizing radiation detectors
- Experience using test equipment for processing electronic signals, such as oscilloscopes
- Demonstrate an extra-curricular interest in experimental physics
