Industrial Placement: Simulating a New Low Energy Muon Beamline

About the Role
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to join the ISIS muon group as an industrial placement student. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project, simulating and designing a new low energy muon beamline at ISIS.
Key Responsibilities
- Work together with ISIS scientists to simulate and optimize a new low energy muon beamline and instrument at ISIS.
- Develop an understanding of how to use Geant4 and G4beamline to simulate charged particle beams.
- Quantify how efficiently the beamline can slow muons for use in materials science experiments.
- Work with ISIS and visiting scientists on any related experiments being carried out during the placement.
About the Scheme
STFC's industrial placement scheme offers a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in a real-world research environment. As an industrial placement student, you will be exposed to exciting projects and challenges from the start and will have the opportunity to work alongside world-leading engineers, scientists, and technicians.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement.
- Required or have requested to take an industrial placement year.
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement.
- Able to commence employment in summer 2025.
- Be able to quickly become familiar with new scientific software.
- Have experience of data analysis and drawing scientific conclusions.
- Experience with basic computer programming.
- Be able to communicate thoughts and ideas effectively.
- Undergraduate level knowledge of electromagnetism and how charged particles behave in magnetic and electric fields.
