About the Role
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our team as an Industrial Placement student in Beamline Simulation for Elemental Analysis. This exciting opportunity will provide the successful candidate with the chance to work on cutting-edge research projects, develop their skills and knowledge, and contribute to the advancement of science and technology.
About the Project
The project involves the development of a new area at the ISIS Muon Source, which uses the unique capabilities offered by the RIKEN-RAL muon facility. The successful candidate will be involved in the simulation and optimization of the RIKEN-RAL muon beamlines, as well as the integration of the resultant modeling of the beamline and detector geometry in the data analysis package. This project has the potential to lead to significant benefits to ISIS, including improved performance and a better-optimized instrument.
About the Team
The successful candidate will be a member of the ISIS Muon group and will be supported by group members Sayani Biswas, Adrian Hillier, and James Lord. The team is responsible for the operation and development of the ISIS Muon Source, which provides beams of subatomic particles that are used to study a wide range of different materials in order to answer questions in science and engineering.

About the Requirements
To be eligible for this opportunity, you must:
- Be currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
- Be required or have requested to take an industrial placement year
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- Able to commence employment in summer
- Have a strong understanding of Physics or Chemistry or a related subject
- Have a basic knowledge of programming languages, preferably Python or equivalent
- Have good communication skills and demonstrate good team working capabilities
- Be willing to develop new skills, both technical and non-technical
