Position Overview
We are excited to present an opportunity for a skilled and enthusiastic Imaging Beamline Scientist (Grade 5) or Senior Scientist (Grade 4), depending on your expertise and experience.
This position is based at the I13-2 Imaging beamline, where we investigate micro- and nano-structured materials across various scientific disciplines, including biology, materials science, and environmental studies, utilizing an energy range of 6-30keV. We are advancing our capabilities with new high-resolution microscopy instruments, including a prototype full-field microscope (TXM) with an extensive field of view. Recently, we have integrated a fully automated sample changer (robot arm), enabling the analysis of hundreds of samples daily. Ongoing upgrades to the beamline include significant enhancements to optical components and the endstation.
We seek a candidate who is eager to engage in research across several domains: materials science, biomedical research, energy studies, environmental science, geology, chemistry, or engineering. The research will span I13L and other beamlines, offering opportunities for multiscale imaging. You will actively pursue collaborations in your research area, engage with Diamond users in collaborative projects, and contribute to the development of beamline instrumentation alongside the Principal Beamline Scientist.
Key responsibilities for the Beamline Scientist role include:
- Serving as the primary contact for users, assisting with beamline setup, and providing guidance on experimental approaches, data analysis, and research methodologies.
- Following up on user experiments to ensure successful dissemination of results.
- Configuring multiple complex and customized equipment setups to fulfill user experiment requirements.
- Overseeing the daily coordination of support teams at Diamond to facilitate beamline upgrade initiatives.
- Conducting collaborative research projects.
- Developing your own research agenda and sharing findings through publications and presentations.
- Collaborating on beamline enhancements and the creation of new equipment or systems, including specific responsibilities for design, manufacturing, installation, testing, and commissioning.
- Partnering with software teams and the principal beamline scientist to create a user-friendly environment and automated data analysis pipelines.
Additional responsibilities for the Senior Beamline Scientist role will encompass:
- Leading the design, procurement, testing, installation, and commissioning of critical beamline or instrumentation components, particularly for the Diamond-II upgrade.
- Establishing a well-defined independent scientific, technical, or software research theme and achieving international recognition in your area of expertise.
- Maintaining a strong record of scientific publications.
- Demonstrating experience with beamline instrumentation and design, construction, and commissioning.
- Having proficiency in additional techniques such as tomography or spectroscopy.
- Managing a beamline for user operations.
- Leading a small team effectively.
Strong interpersonal skills are essential for working with beamline users and integrating into a collaborative team environment.
