About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Beamline Scientist to join our team at Diamond Light Source, a world-leading synchrotron science facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and operation of our Coherent Soft X-ray Imaging and Diffraction (CSXID) beamline, which will provide polarised soft x-rays with high coherent flux and support a range of coherent imaging techniques.

Key Responsibilities
  • Champion the detailed design, prototyping, construction, commissioning, and ongoing optimisation of the CSXID beamline.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to drive the development of both hardware and software, requiring excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Develop an internationally competitive research program, leading your own research and taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the beamline.
  • Participate in in-house research programmes on the beamline, and participate in the maintenance, ongoing development, and upgrades of the beamline and endstations.
  • Provide user support, as a local contact, by assisting visiting scientists in carrying out a wide range of experiments.
Requirements
  • Hold an appropriate Science or Engineering Degree or equivalent, as well as a PhD and proven relevant experience in a scientific field relevant to the post.
  • Demonstrate experience and knowledge in the following areas: quantum or functional materials, synchrotron measurements such as coherent imaging, ptychography, polarised soft x-ray scattering, and synchrotron-based x-ray techniques.
  • Have experimental skills, and the ability to conduct high quality original research.
  • Be familiar with Python programming for data analysis, data acquisition, and the control of scientific equipment.
