Position Overview

We are excited to announce an opening for a skilled and enthusiastic Imaging Beamline Scientist (Grade 5) or Senior Scientist (Grade 4), depending on your expertise and experience.

This position is based at the I13-2 Imaging beamline, where we investigate micro- and nano-structured materials across various scientific disciplines, including biology, materials science, and environmental studies, within the energy spectrum of 6-30keV. We are advancing new tools for high-resolution microscopy, including a prototype full-field microscope (TXM) with an extensive field of view. Recently, we have integrated a fully automated sample changer (robot arm), enabling the analysis of hundreds of samples daily. The beamline is undergoing significant enhancements, including the reconstruction of essential optical components and the endstation.

We seek an individual who will actively participate in research initiatives in areas such as materials science, biomedical studies, energy research, environmental science, geology, chemistry, or engineering. Research activities can be conducted across I13L and other beamlines, providing opportunities for multiscale imaging. You will be encouraged to pursue collaborations in your research domain, engage in joint research efforts with Diamond users, and contribute to the development of beamline instrumentation alongside the Principal Beamline Scientist.

Key responsibilities for the Beamline Scientist role include:

  • Serving as the primary contact for users by preparing the beamline and offering guidance on experimental setups, data analysis, and research methodologies.
  • Following up on user experiments to ensure successful dissemination through publications.
  • Setting up complex and customized equipment tailored to user experiment requirements.
  • Coordinating daily activities with support teams at Diamond to facilitate beamline upgrade projects.
  • Engaging in collaborative research efforts.
  • Developing your own research agenda and sharing findings through publications and presentations.
  • Collaborating on beamline enhancements and the creation of new equipment or systems, including overseeing specific components of the beamline through design, manufacturing, installation, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Partnering with software teams and the principal beamline scientist to create a user-friendly environment and automated data analysis pipelines.

Additional responsibilities for the Senior Beamline Scientist position will encompass:

  • Leading the design, procurement, testing, installation, and commissioning of significant beamline or instrumentation components, particularly for the Diamond-II beamline upgrade.
  • Establishing a well-defined independent scientific, technical, or software research theme and achieving international recognition in this area of expertise.
  • Maintaining a successful record of scientific publications.
  • Demonstrating experience with beamline instrumentation and design, construction, and commissioning.
  • Having proficiency in additional techniques such as tomography or spectroscopy.
  • Managing a beamline for user operations.
  • Leading a small team effectively.

Strong interpersonal skills are essential for collaborating with beamline users and integrating within a beamline team.
