Didcot, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Full time

Position: Instrument Scientist

Salary: £39,375 - £43,313 per annum (based on qualifications and experience)

Hours: Full Time

Contract Type: Fixed Term, 14 months.

Location: STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

Are you passionate about advancing your career as a scientist within the UK National Laboratories?

This role presents an excellent opportunity for a qualified individual to gain valuable early career experience as an Instrument Scientist. You will collaborate with our team to enhance the scientific initiatives of the Disordered Materials Group at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source.

Our expertise lies in employing neutron diffraction techniques alongside contemporary computational and analytical approaches to investigate the structure of liquids and amorphous materials across atomic, molecular, and nanometric scales.

We are a dedicated team seeking a highly motivated individual who aspires to contribute to a specialized group engaged in nationally and internationally recognized scientific research, and who is eager to support a vibrant community of academic and industrial researchers.

At STFC, we provide the flexibility, autonomy, and world-class facilities necessary for you to excel in your work and contribute to groundbreaking achievements that will instill lifelong pride.

Role Overview

Your primary responsibilities will include offering local expertise to assist visiting research teams utilizing our Small Angle Neutron Diffractometer for Amorphous and Liquid Samples (SANDALS).

Your duties will typically encompass three core activities:

  • Instrument operations and development
  • Conducting scientific research
  • Providing support to visiting users

As an Instrument Scientist at ISIS, you will have the opportunity to engage and build relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues, fostering collaborative efforts.

Candidate Profile

  • A PhD or equivalent in biology, chemistry, materials science, physics, or a related field.
  • A solid scientific foundation with clear potential for an independent or collaborative research program that effectively utilizes the instrumentation supported by the ISIS Disordered Materials Group.
  • Practical experience with at least one large-scale neutron or X-ray facility-based atomic/molecular structural characterization or analysis methodology, such as:
    • X-ray crystallography
    • Small angle scattering
    • Atomic structure-focused spectroscopies including XAS, EXAFS, NMR, etc.
    • Development of sample environments for neutron or X-ray experiments
    • Utilization or development of atomistic modeling techniques like Monte Carlo or molecular dynamics.
  • Demonstrated publication record in relevant scientific fields, such as soft/hard condensed matter, commensurate with experience.

Benefits

We offer a comprehensive range of benefits, including:

  • 30 days of annual leave (in addition to 8 bank holidays and 2.5 privilege days)
  • Flexible working hours
  • An excellent defined average salary pension scheme
  • Accessible public transport links and free parking
  • Outstanding learning and development opportunities.
