Polarized Neutrons Researcher

We are seeking a highly motivated and independent placement student to join our Polarized Neutrons section at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). As a member of our team, you will contribute to the development of new instrumentation and simulation methods, and provide staff training and advice.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct research and development work towards improving 3He cell performance
- Develop a chamber for in-situ X-ray and neutron reflectometry study of silicon wafers coated by alkali metal
- Investigate the influence of alkali metal coating protocols on 3He polarization decay
- Collaborate with the team to develop new instrumentation and simulation methods
- Present research results in scientific meetings and seminars
- Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course
- Required or requested to take a placement year
- Right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- Able to commence employment in Summer 2025
- Studying for a degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or similar
- Good laboratory skills and basic knowledge of scripting/programming
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
- Basic awareness of the project context and physical principles underlying project
- Basic knowledge of NMR techniques
- Basic knowledge of surface chemistry and surface characterisation techniques
- Ability to work independently
