Soft Matter Scientist Industrial Placement

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Soft Matter Research Scientist for a 12-month industrial placement. This exciting opportunity will provide you with the chance to work alongside our experienced scientists and engineers in the Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) group, where you will contribute to cutting-edge research in antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
About the RoleAs a Soft Matter Research Scientist, you will be responsible for conducting research in the SANS group, focusing on the interaction between microbes and antimicrobial agents. You will use advanced instruments at ISIS to explore these interactions and gain a deeper understanding of AMR. Your role will involve learning new scientific principles and experimental techniques, as well as working independently and as part of a team to achieve project goals.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct practical lab work and characterisation experiments
- Learn how to use a SANS instrument to perform structural characterisation of samples
- Develop knowledge of small-angle scattering techniques and analysis methods relevant to the project
- Present work through oral and written reports
- Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university to complete your degree following the placement
- Required or requested to take an industrial placement year
- Right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- Able to commence employment in summer 2025
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Enthusiasm for learning new scientific principles and experimental techniques
- Effective problem-solving skills
