BioDeuteration Support Scientist Industrial Placement

Join our team at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) as a BioDeuteration Support Scientist Industrial Placement. This exciting opportunity is part of our Industrial Placement Scheme, which provides students with hands-on experience in a real-world research environment.
About the RoleWe are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a BioDeuteration Support Scientist. As a member of our team, you will be responsible for supporting the production of deuterated recombinant proteins in bacteria and researching the feasibility of production of perdeuterated cholesterol.
Key Responsibilities- Producing deuterated recombinant proteins in bacteria using established protocols
- Researching the feasibility of production of perdeuterated cholesterol and making initial steps towards its production
- Analyzing the produced biomolecules using equipment and facilities at ISIS, Research Complex at Harwell, and Central Laser Facilities
- Participating in experimental design, analysis, and troubleshooting
- Producing and analyzing experimental data
- Documenting findings and reporting them at internal and external meetings
- Supporting the ISIS Biology Laboratories Manager in maintaining the BioLab facilities and ensuring Health and Safety standards are met
- Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
- Required or have requested to take an industrial placement year
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- Able to commence employment in summer 2025
- Taking an undergraduate course in Life Sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or any other related subject
- Demonstrable wet laboratory experience, either from practical classes at the University or previous employment
- Enjoy laboratory environment and laboratory work
- Excellent practical skills, enquiring mind, and ability to fix and troubleshoot
- Good understanding of Health and Safety in the Biological Laboratory
- Interest in cell culture, preparation of bio samples, and studying of soft matter using neutron beam line, or in either
- Experience of culturing live cells (bacteria, yeast, mammalian, or insect cells)
- Previous successful completion of a scientific experiment/project
- Experience of writing COSHH forms and doing Risk Assessments
