The Association for Laboratory Medicine is a non-profit member organisation for laboratory medicine professionals that works to ensure the highest possible standards for laboratory testing and patient care. The organisation's publishing and communications arm oversees a range of projects; its main three outputs are the international academic journal, the Annals of Clinical Biochemistry, a members' news magazine named LabMed News, and a patient information website named Lab Tests Online UK.

As trainee editorial assistant in a small and supportive team, you will gain highly varied experience across the organisation's three main editorial outputs, as well as supporting research for a brand new podcast series being produced by the organisation.

What you will learn

Receive journal editorial training with an academic focus to give you a huge leg up if applying for roles with journal publishersKey editorial skills for non academic editorial roles as well: proposing and writing news articles, conducting interviews, proofreading and copy-editing to house style, copy-chasingEngaging in digital publishing best practices and gaining insight into what it takes to run a digital publishing projectLearning how to write for online audiencesHow to design social media and marketing materials using CanvaGain strong experience in stakeholder managementYou will be able to build a portfolio of original content you have written Key activities Conduct editorial checks on ScholarOne system for manuscripts submitted to the journal, learning about ethics checks, editor management and how academic journals generally operateRespond to author queries, assist with creating an email newsletter and reading materials for editorial team, and learn how to assess journal and editor performanceWriting news articles and content for the website and member magazineSupport the research of stories for a brand new podcast being produced by the organisationHelp with administrative tasks in the peer review process for the patient information website, gaining an awareness of best practices for digital contentSupport on some social media and design work with the marketing and communications officerSupport the editorial boards and external suppliers with their queriesAttend staff team, editorial board and committee meetings and gain experience in communicating with and building relationships with stakeholders.
