About the Team

An opportunity to join the Warwickshire Attendance Service has become available and if successful you will be joining the team as we continue our journey towards full implementation of 'Working together to improve school attendance' across teams and services in Warwickshire.

Reporting to the Team Lead - Attendance Service, you will be working within a friendly established team. All aspects of the role of Education Casework Officer are undertaken in line with guidance 'Working together to improve school attendance' which will become statutory in August 2024.

You will be working collaboratively with multiple agencies, teams and services, facilitating whole school attendance focused support, advice, and guidance to schools and contributing to improved outcomes for children and young people. Removing barriers to attendance is a key driver in 'Working together to improve school attendance'.

Where appropriate, you will also contribute to a range of more focussed formalised support, including the use of Attendance Contracts, Notice to Improve, Parenting Orders and education supervision orders. As a last resort, you may be required to undertake prosecution on behalf of the local authority.

About the Role

Your role will be supporting the delivery of the four core local authority functions from 'Working Together to Improve School Attendance' which includes delivering Targeting Support Meetings, communication and advice, multi-disciplinary support for families and legal intervention. Working as part of a team there will be on-going training, support and supervision provided to you.

Over seeing/managing a defined locality area and acting as a single point of contact, you will work collaboratively with your allocated maintained, academy, independent schools, and a variety of other settings. You will identify children who are persistently or severely absent or at risk of being so and agree appropriate actions to support to remove their barriers to attendance. This will include working directly with various agencies who offer universal, targeted and specialist support to children, young people, and their families.

You will also be required to provide schools with advice and guidance in relation to whole school attendance strategies, staged approaches to improved attendance, coding, policy, systems, and processes.

Where there is a lack of parental engagement, you will contribute to parenting contracts, oversee parenting orders and education supervision orders. This will involve managing a caseload, completing assessments, keeping electronic case records, working to tight deadlines, producing evidence and reports which are of a high quality, up- to- date and accurate. As a last resort, appropriate cases will require you to use formal processes of escalation and enforcement.

Full induction and training will be provided along with ongoing continuous professional development.

Key Requirements

  • We are seeking someone who has experience of direct work supporting children and families within a social care setting or team setting for example police, housing, or within a school.
  • You may have experience delivering strategies and interventions to address barriers to attendance or with training and support have transferrable skills to enable you to undertake all aspects of the role of an Education Casework Officer.
  • We would be keen to hear from you if you have experience of working with children and young people who have experience of cost-of-living crisis, anxiety, mental health, SEND.
  • You'll may experience of working with childhood experience of trauma and attachment but more importantly direct work experience of offering early help at the earliest opportunity.

    Although we have three area bases – North (Bedworth), South (Warwick) and East (Rugby), we work in line the WCC agile working and a large part of the role is independent working. The successful applicant will be delivering support to schools across a designated locality area; therefore you must be prepared and able to travel.
