Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and confident Genetic Counsellor to join our Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions Service at GOSH. We are the largest ICVD service in Europe and we are looking to add to our friendly and dynamic multi-disciplinary team including Doctors, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Research Practitioners and Principal Genetic Counsellor.

You will be based at our department in the heart of Bloomsbury, where we run daily clinics, but there is flexibility to work virtually when appropriate.

Yous should have previous experience of managing an autonomous clinical caseload and have excellent communication skills for effective team working. You will have expertise and interest in cardiac genetics and/or general genetics who are looking to specialise.

We are keen to help staff develop areas of interest and expand the service, as well as build up research and educational activities, subject to the requirements of the service. You should also have experience of teaching and be willing to adapt to the changing needs of the service.

You should be be registered with the Genetic Counsellor Registration Board (GCRB) or be a registered genetic counsellor (clinical scientist) with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Those due to register with the GCRB or HCPC in 2023 or who are registered with an overseas body which has a reciprocity agreement in place with the GCRB will also be considered.

Main duties of the job

To have responsibility for a specialist cardiac but varied patient caseload, incorporating care coordination remit as required To provide information, clinical advice and support to patients and families within caseload and act as a resource to other professionals involved in the patients care. To work autonomously and undertake regular Genetic Counsellor led clinics. To work closely with the principal Genetic Counsellor to cross cover and represent them as appropriate in their absence. Act as an ambassador for the department and speciality across the Trust and regional service. To deliver educational programmes for genetic and non-genetic health care professionals across primary, secondary and tertiary care. To contribute to teaching (internally and externally), audit, SOP's, patient leaflets and other protocols as needed by the service. To achieve / maintain Registration with the Academy for Healthcare Sciences (AHCS) and promote a culture of genetic counsellor registration amongst the genetic counsellor team through mentorship

First degree in relevant subject and MSc in Genetic Counselling OR Graduate Nurse or Midwife with two years post-registration experience plus counselling skills training of at least 120 hours and an accredited genetics science course of at least 30 hours Registered Genetic Counsellor with AHCS: if not AHCS Registered, appointment on band 6 is possible with the expectation that Registration is obtained within 3 years of appointment. OR Registered Genetic Counsellor (clinical scientist) with the HCPC and be willing to commit to register with AHCS within 1-2 years of appointment. OR Registered with an overseas body which has a reciprocity agreement in place with the GCRB and be willing to commit to register with the AHCS within 1-2 years of appointment.
