The Congenital Cardiac Service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust is based at the Leeds General Infirmary. Both the children's and adult services are located at this site, as well as all necessary supporting services. The Department is a supra-regional service, serving a population of 5.5 million in the Yorkshire and North Trent region. The annual workload of the department is recovering after the pandemic and aiming at 500 operations comprising neonates, infants, children, and adults with congenital heart disease. This post supports the Consultant Congenital Cardiac Surgeons and works very closely with the Paediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiologists, the Intensive care units, and the wider multidisciplinary team

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assist the Consultant Surgeons in the operating theatre for 2-3 days per week and supports the cardiac ICUs and wards. They will attend the weekly multidisciplinary meeting and departmental audit meetings and attend the outpatient clinic. The post holder will participate in the 1:5 non-resident on call Rota for the Congenital Cardiac Surgery Service.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will assist the Consultant Surgeons in the operating theatre for 2-3 days per week and supports the cardiac ICUs and wards. They will attend the weekly multidisciplinary meeting and departmental audit meetings and attend the outpatient clinic. The post holder will participate in the 1:5 non-resident on call rota for the Congenital Cardiac Surgery Service.

The seniority of the post holder will be at Registrar level in the operating theatre, ICU and wards and outpatients and the administrative duties associated with this. These posts do not have educational approval from the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery. However, the Doctor will have the opportunity to attend and contribute to the teaching programmes within the department. He/ She will be expected to take an active part in the audit programme. The Clinical Director will agree an appropriate programme of CPD and Appraisal with the post holder. Research is encouraged.

Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date Evidence of achievement of ST3 competences in congenital cardiac surgery or equivalent at time of application. Training in adult cardiac surgery and preferably has experience in congenital cardiac surgery. Eligibility to work in the UK. Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.

All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English or Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) results showing a score of at least 7.0 in each domain (speaking, listening, reading, writing),with an overall score of at least 7.5, to be achieved in a single sitting and within 24 months of the time of application If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills, but do not have evidence in one of the above forms, they must provide alternative supporting evidence of language skills
