Applicants are invited to apply for a Clinical/Research Fellow (Trust Doctor) in Trauma & Orthopaedics at Leeds General Infirmary.

The successful candidate would take a leading role in the organisation of clinical activities and delivery of clinical trials in partnership with key clinical staff. They will also be the point of reference for medical staff, management, foundations, and external funding organisations. The successful candidate will need attend as required, the courses organised by the department and occasionally to present at national and international meetings, the overall research portfolio of the unit.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will assist in the delivery of accurate high-quality data in partnership with key clinical staff and deliver end-user training in the use of departmental database systems to ensure the level of data quality is maintained.

All orthopaedic trauma patients are admitted to the Leeds General Infirmary. Particular specialist services provided are pelvic and acetabular reconstruction, spinal injuries, open fractures, post injury limb reconstruction and complex fracture work. There is a specific interest in polytrauma, and many peripheral trauma units refer most of their multiple injuries straight to Leeds General Infirmary on day one.

The post is designed to support the research/clinical activities of this well-established trauma service. The referral base is continuing to develop and grow and forms the basis of the new Trauma Centre at Leeds General Infirmary.

About us

The Department of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery provides Trauma and Elective services to Leeds residents and beyond.

The in-hospital services provided at the Major Trauma Centre of the Yorkshire and Humber regional trauma network, are led by 10 of the 34 Consultants of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Department.

The Major Trauma Services cover the adult and paediatric population of West Yorkshire of more than 3.5 million, admitting an average of more than 1,100 TARN approved trauma cases (Less then 600 of ISS Equal or lower then16).

A tertiary referral service is provided for spine and scoliosis surgery, pelvic and acetabular reconstruction, paediatric acute and elective surgery, limb reconstruction, complex brachial plexus and upper extremity surgery.

Job responsibilities

General Orthopaedic services are currently provided from two sites in Leeds. Paediatric, hand surgery and spine surgery is provided at Leeds General Infirmary. Complex and revision lower limb arthroplasty, upper limb and foot and ankle surgery are provided at Chapel Allerton Hospital.

Leeds General Infirmary has 3 orthogeriatric wards, one major trauma polytrauma ward, one trauma ward, one paediatric ward including 2 paediatric HDU beds, one spinal surgery ward and a four bedded HDU shared with plastic surgery. There are 2 trauma theatres running all day lists, one major trauma polytrauma theatre and one spine theatre. All trauma outpatients are seen in a dedicated fracture clinic with supporting radiology facilities and the A& E Department are on the ground floor of the same building.

DUTIES OF THE POST

To take a leading role in the co ordination of the research activities of the T& O Department. The post holder will assist in the preparation of grant applications, to facilitate the recruitment of patients in clinical trials, to support medical staff obtaining patient records, to organise the research meeting of the department, to maintain databases and to produce frequent reports reflecting the overall work of the unit. . In a sense, this person will be the point of reference for medical staff, management, foundations, external funding organisations

The post holder will also assist in outpatient clinics & theatre sessions.

To attend as required the courses organised by the department and occasionally to present at national and international meetings the overall research portfolio of the unit.

To assist in the delivery of accurate high quality data in partnership with key clinical staff and deliver end user training in the use of departmental database systems to ensure the level of data quality is maintained.

The post holder will work closely with Professor Giannoudis in the clinical setting and will be responsible for organising the monthly research meeting of the department.

Candidates must be able to:

Document the existing and newly initiated clinical projects and clinical trials.

Produce annual reports reflecting the clinical activities of the department.

Assist with the submission of clinical applications for ethics approval.

5 years experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice More than 2 years experience of Orthopaedic Surgery at ST3+ level t least 5 years experience in Surgical specialities by the time of intended start date
