Job summary

Anopportunity for a Locum Consultant Cardiac Surgeon within theCardio-respiratory Clinical Service Unit is immediately available for a periodof 6 months. This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Cardiac Surgicalteam.

Thepost will be based at The Yorkshire Heart Centre, Leeds General Infirmary.

Thesuccessful applicant should hold accreditation in the Royal College of Surgeonsor equivalent and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months ofbeing admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a trainingprogramme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by theDeputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicantsshould have established skills in Cardiac Surgery. Excellent communication and team workingskills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

The interview will take place on the 27th August via Teams.

Main duties of the job

Workin an established cardiac unit alongside a team of adult surgeons withSpecialist interests in aortic and mitral surgery, the new appointment willhave 1 - 2 all day operating sessions per week, one out-patient clinic and beexpected to actively participate in multi-disciplinary teaching and governancemeetings. The on-call responsibilitywill be a 1:7. This will be equivalent to a 10 PA job plan with DCC and SPAs.

Job responsibilities

Thisis a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon withinCardio-Respiratory Clinical Service Unit.

Thispost will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Cardiac Surgical team.

MissBetsy Evans, Mr Kalyana Javangula, Mr Pankaj Kaul, Mr Walid Elmahdy, MissAntonella Ferrara and Mr Sotiris Papaspyros.

Thereare currently six substantive consultants working full-time within theservice. All consultants are based atthe Yorkshire Heart Centre on the Leeds General Infirmary site.

Therewill be - all-day operating sessions per week. It is expected that the surgeon will workflexibly to organise to cover the theatre schedule in order to fulfil therequired operating sessions per year according to the locally agreed SLA 63operation sessions over the 42-week working year.

TheYHC serves a population of million for cardiac surgery and specialisedcardiology. There is a strong research base with a desire to use and evaluatenew technology. There is an activesurgical involvement with TAVI which is still an expanding service also thereis an active research programme in catheter-based mitral valve interventions.

There are active teaching and research links withLeeds School of Medicine and the University of Leeds, both well situated onadjacent sites.

To deliver care to patients within Cardiac atthe LGI

On-call rota 1 in 7

Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings

link with consultant colleagues inother relevant site specialist teams working closely with Cardiology, Radiologyand Vascular Surgery.

To work with colleagues in Cardiac Surgery to deliveracute on call (currently 1 in 6). This includes both out-of-hours cover inaddition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.

contribute to research, teaching, andnew developments within Cardiac Surgery. The post holder will be encouraged tofacilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going inthe department.

Should have completed a recognised training programme in cardiothoracic surgery leading to CCST/entry to the specialist register

Qualifications

FRCS CTh (or equivalent) CCT with subspecialty accreditation in Cardiac Surgery (or within six months of same) or equivalent qualification.

Desirable

Higher degree MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty

Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice. Eligibility to work in the UK.

Experience

Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Cardiac surgery with an appropriate sub specialist interest Specifically, he/she must demonstrate higher training, experience and competence in Cardiac surgery with an appropriate sub specialist interest

Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.

Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff

Language and Skills

All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or Applicants have achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. (An overall minimum score of If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors. Experience of participation in regular clinical audit. Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
