Job summary

Thisis a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Surgeon, with a special interestin Pancreatic Surgery. The post will be available immediately for a period of 6months.

Thepost will be based at St James University Hospital. You will be joining ateam of 5 surgeons who currently provide the full range of Pancreatic Servicesboth benign and malignant.

Thesuccessful candidate will have an on-call commitment of 1 in 10 shared with theother Pancreatic and Upper GI surgeons.

Applicants should have established skills andcompetencies in Pancreatic and General Surgery. A strong academic record withevidence of publications and successful grant applications is essential.Excellent communication and team working skills and a strong commitment toteaching and service development are essential.

Main duties of the job

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

Todeliver care to patients with pancreatic conditions within Leeds and thesurrounding areas.

Out-patient clinics

Supervision of patients

Care of acute patients on a 1 in 10basis

Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings

Tolink with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams withinthe West Yorkshire region.

Towork with colleagues in General Surgery to deliver acute on call (currently 1in 10) This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward roundsduring normal working hours.

Tolead academic clinical and basic science projects within our research group. Toobtain funding for academic projects. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitateand contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in thedepartment.

Tocontribute to teaching, and new developments within the Trust.

Theappointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the leadin the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings;

Clinical audit programmes;

Development and application of agreedclinical guidelines.

Thispost is a locum post for a period of a maximum of 6 months.

BACKGROUND

Thisis a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Surgeon, with special interests inPancreatic Surgery,

Thispost will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Pancreas Team.

Thepost will be based at St James University Hospital. You will be joining a teamof 5 Pancreatic consultants who currently provide the full range of Pancreaticand general surgical services both benign and malignant.

REQUIREMENTSOF THE POST

General Training and Qualifications

The appointee must holdaccreditation in General Surgery in the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalentand have completed higher specialist training or equivalent if currently in atraining programme within the UK.

Applicantsmust be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted tothe Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK orhave references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director andClinical Director.

Applicantsmust provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevantRoyal College at the time of application, in order for their application to beprogressed further.

Experience

Theappointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience andcompetence in all aspects of general surgery and appropriate experience ingeneral surgery and in particular pancreatic surgery.

Clinical Audit

Theappointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the leadin the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings;

Clinical audit programmes;

Development and application of agreedclinical guidelines.

Thisis to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supportingprogrammed activity. It would beexpected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at therelevant departmental audit meetings and that such attendance would be recordedin accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy.

Inthe discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected tomaintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuingmedical education.

TEACHING

TheTrust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with theUniversity of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and allConsultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriatecontribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

Thepost-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teachingprogramme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organisedon a speciality or clinical area basis.

Thepost-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliverappropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract withthe NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.

Theappointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teachingof postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in Pancreatic andGeneral Surgery in the Local Education and Training Board.

JOBPLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTS

Thejob plan review will take place annually, normally with the Clinical Directoror Lead Clinician for Pancreatic Surgery.The annual job plan review may result in a revised job plan. There may be an interim review of the jobplan where duties, responsibilities, accountability arrangements or objectiveshave changed or need to change significantly within the area.

ProposedJob Plan

Thepost consists of 10 PAs with PAs of direct clinical care DCC and PAs ofsupporting professional activity SPA.

Pleasenote that this post has the opportunity to apply for funding for research PAs.If the applicant is successful in the bid for funding, DCC PAs will beconverted into research PAs.

FRCS or equivalent qualification Eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice. Eligibility to work within the UK.
