This is fixed term post that will provide the postholder an opportunity of exposure to a wide range of paediatric cardiology. There is a possibility that the post could be extended beyond this, depending upon staffing levels and the incumbent's career needs. The postholder will gain experience in all areas of Paediatric Cardiology with the majority of their time committed to participating in the clinical service

The main objectives of this post are:

o Contribute to the inpatient treatment of patients with congenital heart diseaseo To provide clinical support, together with other registrars/fellows to the outpatient To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Fellow will be expected to take part in the full range of clinical activities of the department. The duties, sufficient to maintain and develop pre-existing skills, will be negotiated with the Consultants in Paediatric cardiology.

About us

The Department of Paediatric Cardiology provides a comprehensive service to children with congenital and acquired heart disease throughout the network. The Department has an active programme of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, a complete Interventional Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, Echocardiography, specialised cross sectional imaging and Electrophysiology.

The Consultants work as a team. For a week at a time, one Consultant is responsible for the entire inpatient service and is available to deal immediately with all inpatient clinical problems. Major decisions about clinical management/interventions are taken at the multidisciplinary combined paediatric cardiology/cardiac surgery meeting, which all clinical staff attend.

The department has an international reputation for excellence and innovation in many fields including fetal cardiology, congenital intervention, echocardiography and cardiac MRI.

The Department of Paediatric Cardiology provides a comprehensive service to children with congenital and acquired heart disease throughout the South Thames region. The Department has an active programme of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, a complete Interventional Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, Echocardiography and specialised cross-sectional imaging and Electrophysiology.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

The clinical fellow will take part in all the clinical activities of the department. The duties, sufficient to maintain and develop their pre-existing skills, will be negotiated with the Consultants in Paediatric Cardiology.

The postholder will be responsible for the care of neonates, infants, children and adolescents with congenital heart disease undergoing cardiac investigation and treatment on an in-patient and out-patient basis. This will also include assessment of day cases being seen on the daycase unit. In addition, the post holder will complete the medical discharge summaries.

The post holder will be trained in the various diagnostic techniques, such as cross-sectional and colour Doppler echocardiography and if appropriate, transoesophageal echocardiography and stress testing. The appointee may be exposed to other procedures such as cardiac catheterisation and angiography, interventional catheterisation, electrophysiological testing and ablation, pacing and magnetic resonance imaging.

There are daily out-patients clinics (Monday-Friday) at Evelina London Childrens Hospital and the trust fellow can be expected to attend (on average) 1-2 clinic/week but depending on the rota. On occasion, it may be necessary to accompany a Consultant to an outreach clinic usually held in a District General Hospital within the network.

Training:

The training will be clinically orientated. The post will allow the appointee to see a wide spectrum of congenital heart defects and improve their clinical skills. There are daily echocardiography review meetings and formal teaching sessions on aspects of the RCP Paediatric Cardiology Curriculum three times per week.

Clinical Research:

There is no fixed research activity within the post. However, involvement in existing research projects or participation in clinical audit will be actively encouraged.

Teaching Responsibilities:

The post holder will be expected to participate in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, contribute to the training and support of doctors in training, including the role of mentoring of junior staff in the speciality and teaching of medical students.

Experience of teaching junior medical staff and allied health professionals Audit / presentations / delivering teaching at a local level in topics related to paediatric cardiology

Formal training in teaching methodologies Peer-reviewed publications / presentations at a national level in topics related to paediatric cardiology

Clinical Experience & Skills

Essential

At least 6 months experience of paediatric cardiology Demonstrable experience of congenital echocardiography

Desirable

EACVI accreditation in congenital heart disease At least 6 months experience in general paediatrics or neonatal medicine at registrar / fellow level

Good Medical Practice:

Essential

Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council

Non-clinical skills, leadership & management:

Essential
