ACCOUNTABLE TO: Professor Gerald Carr-White & Professor Mark O'Neill

Main duties of the job

Delivery of simulation courses for junior cardiology trainees in order for them to become familiar with and learn the core practical skills required in cardiology, matched to the curriculum in the JRCPTB. Examples include cardiac catheterisation, temporary and permanent cardiac pacing, pericardiocentesis and EP mapping and ablation. The fellow will therefore need to be at a senior level in either electrophysiology or coronary intervention, to enable them to teach key cardiac practical skills to more junior colleagues.

Further development will include the design and development of an advanced cardiology practical simulation programme, to facilitate and augment clinical practice. This will include training in complex coronary intervention, cardiac device implantation and cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac ablation. The senior fellow will be supported by a junior simulation fellow and consultant who will assist in the delivery of this programme as part of the simulation team.

Develop/ expand their skills in Human Patient simulation (HPS) and Medical Education alongside clinical training roles Publish research on their chosen area of interest in HPS/Medical Education

Job responsibilities

The main duties of this role is to develop a cardiac simulation programme for cardiology trainees who will be performing practical and interventional skills. This will require a senior cardiology trainee who is sufficiently competent to deliver and teach such skills to more junior cardiology colleagues.

Responsible for developing, planning and delivery of skills training and simulation courses within KHP working alongside clinical specialistsTo prepare and produce resources and IT materials required to support the aforementioned skills training and simulation coursesTo develop simulation teaching packages which reflect current, evidence and policy based practicesTo work in close collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the development of patient-focused, collaborative protocols / practices / procedures and careIdentify scope for, and further develop multi-disciplinary teaching and learning within the TrustRegularly participate as faculty, including debriefer and embedded practitioner on simulation training daysAct at all times in accordance within the GMCs standards, codes of conduct and scope of professional practiceParticipate in quality assurance, evaluation and audit of programmesAssist in the development and progress of faculty membersParticipate in approved research as indicatedTo be able to act independently in operating the simulation manikins and to liaise with the manufacturers of high fidelity simulators as to the requirements of health service when designing hardware / softwareTo work with industry partners to develop training programmes and modules which augment cardiology training, as described in the JRCTB curriculum. Clinical Ability

Essential

Senior clinical fellow able to teach practical skills to junior trainees (either electrophysiology or interventional cardiology) Signed off as competent for both core cardiology and specialist cardiology work (either electrophysiology or coronary intervention)

Desirable

Prizes or distinctions. Presentation of work at a national or international meeting. Publications in peer reviewed journals. Audit work.

Educational Capability
