This job description sets out the details and service conditions for a Junior Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine and Cardiology, based at Homerton University Hospital.

This is an opportunity for a trainee who may wish to take time out before embarking on a Specialist Training programme in order to gain Cardiology and Intensive Care experience and clinical decision making skills or allow time to study for postgraduate exams.

During Intensive Care Medicine Placement

Duties of the post
- Contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and efficient Intensive Care Medicine service.
- Provide evidence-based care when appropriate.
- Have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in national standards and the local commissioners’ contracts.

During Cardiology Placement

The Clinical Fellow will work closely with the Consultants and Associate Specialist and will support the Cardiology team, Cardiac nurses, and Cardiac physiologists. There are no on-call commitments for this post.

Employing over 3000 people, the hospital has approximately 450 beds and also manages a 50 bed nursing home, Mary Seacole Nursing Home, in Shoreditch, East London. In 2019, the Trust admitted 79,462 people, saw 382,198 people in outpatient clinics and 128,650 people were treated in the accident and emergency department.

The hospital provides a full range of general acute services for the local population and a range of specialist services for patients from further a field. These include perinatal (level 3 NICU) and high-risk obstetrics services, bariatric and laparoscopic surgery, and stroke and neuro-rehabilitation. The hospital has three day surgery theatres and five main operating theatres for all types of general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology, maxillo-facial, urology, ENT and obstetrics. There is a 12-bedded combined adult intensive care / high dependency unit.

During ICU Placement

Audit and administration

The post holder will be expected to contribute and participate in the departments on-going clinical audit programme and will carry out all administrative duties associated with the care of their patients. Intensive Care has a strong focus on clinical audit and clinical risk management and there are regular clinical governance meetings which the appointee will be expected to attend when possible.

During Cardiology Placement

Teaching and Research

The post holder will participate fully in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes. The post holder will work along with Dr Kurbaan and Dr Arshad Cardiology tutors for 3rdyear undergraduate medical students for delivering teaching.

The post holder will be encouraged to pursue his/her own interests in terms of research. Facilities are available to pursue a research interest in clinical and/or basic science.
Audit and administration

The post holder will be required to take an active part in the management and administrative duties within the department and to supervise the work and training of the junior medical staff.

The post holder will be expected to take an active part in multidisciplinary audit and to be involved in improving care to patients, timeliness of communications with General Practitioners and clinical risk management.

The post holder will be expected to complete one audit project during their 6 months stay with the department.
