PURPOSE OF ROLE:

The Design System Lead is tasked with leading the creation, evolution, and maintenance of ii's design system.

This pivotal role ensures that our user interfaces are consistent, engaging, and accessible across all digital touchpoints. The ideal candidate is a visionary leader with a deep understanding of interaction design principles and a strong ability to collaborate across teams.

In terms of governance the successful candidate will assume responsibility for ii's design system. Accountability will sit with our UX Ops Manager, whilst our Design Principal and Lead Designers will be consulted as part of a working group (TBD). The wider UX team will be kept informed of progress and developments.

The Design System Lead focuses on the consistency and scalability of our design system, while the UX Design Principal drives the strategic direction and implementation of user-centered design practices. Together, they will collaborate to create intuitive, engaging, and accessible digital experiences.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Develop and oversee the company's design system, ensuring it aligns with our design, brand, accessibility and usability standards. Establish and document comprehensive design guidelines and reusable components. Collaborate with UX designers, product managers, and development teams to integrate the design system into all product interfaces. Conduct regular evaluations and updates of the design system to ensure consistency and usability. Mentor and provide guidance to designers, fostering a culture of design excellence and continuous improvement. Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices, incorporating them into the design system as appropriate. Act as an advocate for design system adoption and user-centered design practices within the organization.

Skills & Experience Required

5+ years of experience in interaction design, with a strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in design systems. Demonstrable UI design expertise. Proven, expert level proficiency in Figma. Solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and how they impact design. Excellent communication and leadership skills. Experience working in an Agile development environment. Exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving skills with the ability to analyse complex problems and create elegant solutions. Demonstrable experience in dealing with difficult stakeholders. Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts and rationale to diverse audiences. Experience in leading / mentoring designers, providing feedback, and fostering a collaborative and inclusive design culture. Excellent facilitation and workshopping skills.
