The successful candidate will split their time equally between the safety and clinical roles. The safety role will involve working with the Associate Medical Director for Patient Safety to lead specific safety projects as determined by National and Trust priorities. Candidates will be supported to develop skills in our continuous improvement approach 'Improvement Matters' to support successful project delivery. In addition, the successful candidate will be supported to undertake specific safety training including the National Patient Safety Syllabus level 1 and 2 training.

The clinical component of the role will be based within the Division of Medicine and Emergency care, supporting inpatient work within general medicine and/or medical subspecialties depending upon candidate preference and experience. We anticipate that this role will be at the ST1-2 level.

We are looking for the candidate to be able to commence from August 2024.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join a group of junior safety fellows and undertake weekly meetings with the AMD for Patient Safety who will provide support and monitor progress.

Key responsibilities:

1. Gain an in-depth knowledge of the National Patient Safety Strategy and our Trust safety processes including engaging with and supporting implementation of the Patient Serious Incident Response Framework.

2. Lead a safety project aligned to National and Trust priorities.

3. Participation in a group project to improve knowledge and engagement of junior doctors in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement.

4. Promote a positive safety culture across the Trust.

5. Undertake any necessary training relevant to the role including the National Patient Safety Syllabus level 1 and 2 and Improvement Fundamentals.

The post will give excellent exposure to General Internal Medicine with opportunities to work in the Acute Admissions Unit, Care of the Elderly, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Gastroenterology or Diabetes & Endocrinology at a IMT1 level. Placement will depend on the appointee's aspirations, clinical need in the Medicine and Emergency Care Division and also on placement of medical students. There will be opportunities to rotate into two or three departments over the year if that is considered appropriate.

The nature of work will vary but will mostly comprise working on the ward alongside the medical team of trainee doctors under the clinical supervision of a Consultant.

About us

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) provides good quality, safe and effective healthcare to the people of Cheshire and beyond. The Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford, was established as an NHS Trust in April 1991 and became a Foundation Trust in April 2008.

We employ almost 5,000 members of staff, provide around 540 hospital beds, with a range of services including accident and emergency, maternity, outpatients, therapies, and children's health.

The Trust is also part of Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership (CCICP), a unique local health partnership that provides a range of community services for people across South Cheshire and Vale Royal.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, the Trust was recognised nationally for its 'Be Safe Be EquiPPEd' campaign, which aimed to make the Trust as safe as possible for staff and patients, through supporting the correct use of PPE.

The results in the 2020 national NHS Staff Survey showed improvements in all elements of the safety culture theme, with 92% of respondents feeling their role made a difference to our patients. We were also recognised nationally for our workforce health and wellbeing initiatives.

At Mid Cheshire, we value our staff and appreciate that in order to give our patients the best quality, compassionate care, we also need to look after our colleagues.
