The Reisner group Research Laboratory Technician supports the research activities in Professor Erwin Reisner's laboratories in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry by handling non-research and supportive research tasks necessary to maintain laboratory functionality and productivity. This new role will work alongside researchers providing technical support for teaching and research activity to ensure the smooth running of Reisner's laboratories. The role holder will be responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, stock levels, inventories, the chemical database, chemical waste disposal and proactively working with the research team to ensure the laboratory is a clean, safe and organised environment. Equipment maintenance and calibration as well as involvement in assisting research activities such as preparation of standard solutions, samples and experimental set-ups is also required.
Duties include performing calibration of instruments and preparing standard solutions, cell cultures, and buffers (following specific training and instruction), setting up, relocating and assisting in operation of equipment, including arranging PAT testing, making connections, ensuring proper installation and assisting in the use of equipment to conduct experiments, teaching or outreach. Also, conducting routine maintenance of group equipment to ensure it is functional and ready for use, including replacing gas cylinders, topping up consumables, and regular cleaning to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the instruments, monitoring consumable stock items including solvents, standard media, glassware and other laboratory supplies, ordering replacement stock as required, maintaining the inventory of chemicals and biological samples, gas cylinder inventory, and frozen sample inventories, and maintaining the cleanliness of equipment and apparatus, ensure any data produced is archived correctly.
The successful candidate will have good interpersonal skills, be able to demonstrate knowledge of facts, principles, processes and general concepts related to laboratory technician work, have a high degree of precision and accuracy, good IT skills and high organisational skills. They will be qualified to A level, NVQ level 3, or an equivalent level of practical experience in Chemistry, and have knowledge and experience of laboratory work and procedures. Practical experience of laboratory technician scientific research work is desirable.
