This role involves working one-to-one with young people facing multiple and complex challenges due to their lived trauma. These individuals are likely to be going through the toughest of life transitions and need to be supported through a trauma informed lens and through agency navigation, face-to-face support, phone calls and text messages, using supportive conversations that create a sense of belonging and inclusion.

Main duties of the job

Working with unaccompanied young people who have arrived in the country seeking Asylum.

To build positive relationships and trust with UASC - Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (and former UASC) and those identified as vulnerable young people who have experienced being in care; acting as their advocate, mentor and service and system navigator as required. The aim is to increase the likelihood of engagement by these young people with the pathways to services and support they need to meet and maintain their health needs (physically and emotionally). To seek to engage with these young people using an assertive outreach model of practice - using a trauma-informed, strengths-based, and motivational interviewing approach.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be trained in, practice and be supervised in trauma informed advocacy and mentoring support and life-skill coaching that will increase the likelihood that the individual will choose to access and engage fully with all services as appropriate. To work in peripatetic capacity, across Derby City Centre, in young people’s homes and at locations wherever the role is required in order to deliver advocacy, mentor and navigator functions. To accompany and transport clients to healthcare/other appointments in and away from Derby City Centre in so far as it builds trust and positive relationship and developing empowerment in order to meet their own their needs physically, emotionally and socially, in line with DHcFT’s risk management and lone working policies. To use specific engagement techniques such as motivational interviewing and strengths-based approaches, without coercion, to achieve the above in a trauma informed approach. To act on advocacy/mentor as directed by line manager – this may be after discussion/agreement with the Local Authority, Children in Care health team or Designated Nurse for Children in Care. To champion the safeguarding needs of clients, to include both submitting safeguarding referrals and contributing to safeguarding planning. To promote and uphold young peoples’ rights and voice but in line with statutory guidance and local policies/procedures. To work flexibly so as to maintain the most appropriate level of service provision, responding to organisational change and development. To put on activities and workshops to encourage engagement and build relationships.
