Norwich, United Kingdom Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Full time

Job summary

Applications are invited for a consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery who is fellowship trained in Hand Surgery. The post arises to cover the substantial workload in trauma, and increased opportunities in elective practice arising through the opening of the new Norfolk and Norwich Orthopaedic Centre (NaNOC) in July 2024.

A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.

We welcome all applications irrespective of age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race or religion. Additionally, people with disabilities will be offered an interview providing they meet the minimum criteria for the post. The Trust operates job share and flexible working.

The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join the on-call rota at an intensity of 1 in 18. In addition, 2-3 lists per consultant in every 12-week period are allocated to support the trauma service in the second trauma theatre, with both general and subspecialist cases, as the service requires.

The successful candidate will need to be competent in primary management of all areas of acute trauma, especially all fragility fractures around the hip, although support in specialist areas such as paediatrics & spines is provided, and referral of complex cases to colleagues with specialist interests is common.

The appointee will be expected to carry out the whole spectrum of hand and wrist surgery. Experience of complex hand and wrist trauma is essential. An interest in elbow surgery would also be desirable. The majority of hand surgery occurs in our Ambulatory Procedure Unit (APU) under Regional Anaesthesia, alongside our Plastic hand surgery colleagues. GA cases will predominantly take place in NaNOC.

The appointee is expected to support the Hand Therapy Team, specifically with the delivery of the therapist-lead Virtual Finger Fracture Clinic. The appointee will also be expected to support their general trauma colleagues by providing advice, surgical support and pre-planned hand and wrist trauma surgery in the APU in coordination with our upper limb secretarial team.
